Venture Center — the service mark of the Entrepreneurship Development Center (venturecenter.co.in) — is a technology business incubator hosted by CSIR's National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in Pune and approved by DST-NSTEDB. Founded in December 2006, it describes itself as India's largest technology incubator hosted by CSIR's NCL, and it is squarely built for science: materials, chemicals, biological sciences and engineering.
Sectors and scale
Venture Center backs science and deep-tech start-ups across healthcare, medical biotechnology, biomedical devices, diagnostics, agro/food/animal biotech, industrial biotech, life sciences, engineering, agriculture and clean energy. Its impact figures, updated 31 March 2026 on its official site: 1,100+ start-up teams supported; 85% of resident start-ups still active; 55% have at least one woman co-founder; more than $100m in risk capital mobilised in the last ten years; more than $350m in revenue earned by start-ups in the same period; 2,500+ direct jobs created every year; 250+ unique patent families; and around 100 incubatee products that have reached the market — supported by 200+ technical, business and specialist mentors.
Programmes and infrastructure
Its Eklavya Services / Associate Incubatee programme offers advisory support, brand association, VC-library access, IPFACE membership and discounted access to scientific facilities. It runs BIRAC BioNEST bio-incubation and gives preference to BIRAC BIG grantees, and collaborates with BIRAC, DST, the Atal Innovation Mission, MeitY and the Defence Innovation Organisation. Incubatees get access to the ProtoShop, analytical services and meeting infrastructure inside the NCL campus — lab access that is genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere in India.
Fund size
As an incubator, it operates no fund of its own; its corpus is not publicly disclosed.
What sets Venture Center apart is that the science is not outsourced: mentoring is led by Dr Premnath Venugopalan with 200+ technical, business and specialist mentors, and incubatees work inside the NCL campus with access to the ProtoShop, analytical services and meeting infrastructure. The Eklavya Services / Associate Incubatee programme extends advisory support, brand association, VC-library access and IPFACE membership — plus discounts on scientific facilities — to ventures that are not full residents.
Its grant plumbing matters as much as its labs: BIRAC BioNEST bio-incubation on campus, preference for BIRAC BIG grantees, and active collaborations with BIRAC, DST, the Atal Innovation Mission, MeitY and the Defence Innovation Organisation mean a Venture Center start-up sits at the intersection of nearly every central deep-tech funding pipe.
Why it matters for founders
If your start-up's moat lives in a lab — novel materials, diagnostics, biotech, clean energy — Venture Center offers what generic accelerators cannot: NCL's scientific infrastructure, BIRAC-linked grant pathways, and a mentor pool that understands patents. For science founders, it is one of India's highest-leverage front doors.
