Startup funding in India has a fresh kitchen-tech talking point — with an important caveat: this round is not closed yet. D2C smart-appliance startup upliance.ai is in advanced talks to raise $3 million to $4 million (around ₹28–₹37 crore) in a Series A round expected to close by January 2027, sources told Inc42 in a report published on 31 October 2026.
Who is expected to back it
A new investor is expected to join the cap table, while existing backers, including Khosla Ventures, are looking to invest further, the sources said. Inc42 said it had reached out to upliance.ai for comment and would update the story on its response — so founders should treat the round as reported talks, not a done deal, until the company confirms it.
What the money would fund
The proposed funding could help the startup strengthen research and development, improve its interface and expand into international markets. Founded in 2021 by former Ather Energy executive Mahek Mody and former Chaayos employee Mohit Sharma, upliance.ai builds smart kitchen appliances, including the upliance 2.0+ cooking assistant and a 12L Smart Air Fryer Oven launched in July. Its generative-AI system turns recipes — including YouTube recipe videos — into step-by-step instructions its appliances can execute.
The market behind the talks
The startup previously raised ₹34 crore in a seed round led by Khosla Ventures in February 2024, at a valuation of ₹143 crore. Inc42 cites MarkNtel Advisors data putting India's smart kitchen appliances market at $800 million in 2026, projected to reach $2.99 billion by 2032. Established brands are moving into the same space: Wonderchef launched its Chef Magic kitchen robot in April 2024, and Philips launched OneChef in India in March 2026.
Why it matters for founders
Talks are not a term sheet, and a reported round is not a closed round — but the signal is still useful. If you build in consumer hardware, note what investors are paying for here: a software layer (recipes as executable instructions) on top of the appliance, not the appliance alone.
