What True North is
True North is one of India's most respected homegrown private equity firms, founded in 1999 as India Value Fund Advisors (IVFA). In January 2017 the firm unveiled a new brand identity — True North — in the presence of tennis star Andre Agassi, saying the old name no longer reflected its values-driven model (Business Standard). It invests in and transforms mid-sized profitable businesses into large, well-established, socially responsible businesses, and in 2022 added a private credit arm alongside the PE business.
Investment thesis
True North's thesis is to back mid-sized, profitable Indian businesses in chosen sectors and institutionalise them into enduring, valuable companies — “doing business the right way”, underpinned by a values-driven culture. Per Mint, it invests nearly 90% of its corpus in such businesses. Unusually for Indian PE, it pairs investment professionals with operating partners — often sitting chief executives — by sector specialisation.
Sectors and stages
Mid-market growth and buyout investments across consumer, financial services, healthcare & pharmaceuticals, technology products and services, and manufacturing. Around 75% of its latest PE fund is deployed in buyout transactions (ET).
Fund size and cheque sizes
True North has launched seven separate investment funds with a combined corpus exceeding $3 billion, including co-investments (Mint, 2026). Its Fund VI targeted $900 million plus a $500 million co-investment pool, with $600 million raised by mid-2018 (ET); the prior Fund V was $700 million. The average ticket sweet spot for Fund VI is $100–200 million, going up to $300 million. On the credit side, the Performing Credit Regular Income Fund has raised ₹2,000+ crore, completed 23 investments and recorded 11 full and 3 partial exits; a second credit fund is being raised (Business Standard, October 2025).
Notable portfolio and exits
Reported portfolio companies include Fedbank Financial Services, Magma Fincorp, HomeFirst Finance, KIMS Hospitals, Trivitron, Cloudnine Hospitals and VKL Spices (ET, 2018). The firm bought a 51% stake in Max Bupa Health Insurance for ₹510.51 crore in 2019 and acquired Glenmark's orthopaedic and pain-management business in India and Nepal. Its published case studies feature Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT), Aster and Fincare — whose CEO Rajeev Yadav publicly credits True North's support on strategy and digital initiatives. Exit momentum is strong: Mint reported in 2026 that True North had cashed out $2 billion for investors, alongside the sale of its Integrace pharma stake to Warburg Pincus and a 50% stake in Shree Digvijay Cement (Moneycontrol, 2025).
Partners and team
Vishal Nevatia has been Managing Partner since the firm's inception in 1999. Sector leadership on the investment side includes Divya Sehgal and Maninder Juneja (financial services), Prasad Thrikutam (technology products and services), Satish (healthcare, pharmaceuticals and life sciences) and Srikrishna Dwaram (consumer and technology). Kapil Singhal, formerly head of credit at KKR, leads the private credit platform.
Programmes, accelerators and perks
True North runs no public accelerator, incubator or structured founder programme — it is a mid-market PE and private credit house. It has no publicly documented startup credits or perks programme.
Why it matters for founders
True North is the firm to know when your mid-sized, profitable business is ready to become an industry leader: it writes large buyout and growth cheques ($100–200 million), pairs operating chief executives with investors, and has a 25-year record of institutionalising family-run and promoter-led companies across consumer, financial services and healthcare. With its private credit arm fully deployed and raising a second fund, even founders avoiding equity dilution have a door worth knocking on.
