TPG is a leading global alternative asset manager with family-office roots and a West Coast base, founded in 1992. It has grown from a buyout house into a diversified platform spanning private equity, growth, impact, credit, real estate and market solutions — managing US$327 billion in assets as of June 2026, with more than 1,900 employees and 30 offices worldwide.
Investment thesis
TPG describes its approach as built on innovation, organic growth and thematic depth — identifying opportunities through sector and geography work, then growing into them organically or through acquisitions. A defining feature is its impact platform: the firm pairs commercial returns with measurable social and environmental outcomes, and its climate funds have become some of the largest private pools of capital dedicated to the net-zero transition.
Funds and investment approach
TPG puts capital to work through six platforms: TPG Capital (US$94 billion) for large-scale control private equity; TPG Growth (US$35 billion) for growth and middle-market equity; TPG Impact (US$35 billion) — home to the Rise Funds — for private equity targeting societal and financial outcomes; TPG Credit (US$101 billion); TPG Real Estate (US$42 billion); and Market Solutions (US$20 billion). The firm is led by chief executive Jon Winkelried, with co-founder Jim Coulter as executive chairman focused on the impact and climate businesses, whose TPG Rise Climate fund is executive-chaired by former US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson.
Notable portfolio
TPG's landmark India bet is Tata Motors' electric-vehicle business: in 2021 it committed US$1 billion through its US$7 billion climate fund to back Tata's plan to roll out ten new battery electric vehicles. Through The Rise Fund, its global impact fund managed by TPG Growth, TPG invested US$70 million in 2018 in Hyderabad-based Fourth Partner Energy, the distributed-solar company serving commercial and industrial clients. TPG is also an investor in Reliance Jio Infocom and Reliance Retail.
People
TPG is led by chief executive Jon Winkelried, who became sole CEO in 2021; co-founders David Bonderman and Jim Coulter remain central, with Coulter as executive chairman leading the impact and climate platforms alongside former US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson.
Programmes, credits and perks
TPG does not offer startup credits, but its impact architecture is the closest thing to a programme: The Rise Fund backs companies whose reach amplifies progress on the UN sustainable development goals, and TPG Rise Climate focuses on the energy transition — both actively deploy in India, as the Fourth Partner Energy and Tata Motors EV deals show.
How to engage
TPG invests at growth and buyout scale; there is no public application process. Climate and impact founders can reach the Rise platform's teams through advisors, co-investors or the firm's India network, typically once the business has operating scale and measurable impact metrics.
Why it matters for founders
TPG gives Indian founders two doors: conventional growth capital through TPG Growth and Capital, and impact capital through The Rise Fund and TPG Rise Climate. If your company pairs scale with measurable social or climate outcomes — distributed energy, EVs, sustainable industry — TPG's impact platforms are among the deepest-pocketed partners you can find.
