Telangana's food-safety regulator has thrown down the gauntlet on quick commerce. The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) has suspended the licences of dark stores operated by Swiggy Instamart, Flipkart and Zepto after a special enforcement drive uncovered serious violations.
The drive deployed 10 teams of food safety officers and police personnel across dark stores. What they found: expired and damaged food products, cockroach infestation, spoiled vegetables, mould growth, poor storage practices, and lapses in cold-room temperature maintenance. Officials also reported dusty and rusted racks, cobwebs, improper flooring, and food stored alongside non-food items.
Four establishments were suspended immediately as acute health hazards and ordered to halt operations. Officials collected 15 samples on suspicion of adulteration, and improvement and show-cause notices were issued where violations were found. The violations also breached the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations.
This isn't TG SAFE's first move: earlier in September the state imposed a one-year ban on non-dairy or artificial analogue paneer, and a Kukatpally-area drive in Hyderabad suspended FSSAI licences of five establishments. Dark stores are now under particular scrutiny as they become neighbourhood fulfilment centres for groceries — where storage, hygiene and temperature control matter as much as 10-minute delivery.
For quick-commerce founders and operators, the message is blunt: food-safety compliance is now a licence-to-operate issue, not a hygiene checkbox. The infra moat that matters may be cold-chain discipline, not delivery speed.
Why it matters for founders
Quick commerce's next competitive battle is operational: regulators are now suspending licences over cold-room lapses, pest control and storage hygiene. If you're building in food, grocery or dark-store logistics, institutional-grade food-safety ops are a survival requirement — and startups that productize compliance (monitoring, audits, cold-chain tracking) just got a fresh demand tailwind.
