Techstars is the world's most recognisable startup accelerator — and, per Crunchbase, the world's most active pre-seed investor two years running. Since its founding in 2006, it has accelerated more than 10,900 founders across 150+ countries, producing 29 unicorns and alumni including SendGrid, DigitalOcean, ClassPass, Sphero, Chainalysis and Outreach.
Overview and thesis
Techstars was born from an idea email sent by David Cohen to David Brown on February 18, 2006, incorporated on November 14, 2006 by David Cohen, David Brown, Brad Feld and Jared Polis, and ran its first accelerator class in Boulder, Colorado in the summer of 2007. Its operating philosophy is #GiveFirst: help founders without expecting anything in return. The model pairs a small investment with three months of intensive, mentorship-driven support — mentorship, growth and investment phases — ending in a Demo Day before hundreds of investors.
Sectors and stages
Techstars funds startups in all verticals and business models, but only true startups — not small businesses. Admission is highly selective: roughly 1–2 percent of applicants are accepted, with about 12 companies per cohort chosen by each program's managing director and a screening committee. Programs run worldwide, including corporate-partnered accelerators such as the ABN AMRO + Techstars Future of Finance Accelerator and the Techstars Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator, whose Fall 2026 class welcomed more than 57 startups from over 11 countries.
Fund size
Techstars does not publicly disclose total assets under management. Named venture funds include Techstars Ventures 2009 ($5 million), Techstars Ventures 2012 ($25 million) and Techstars Ventures 2014 ($155 million). In 2022, Techstars partnered with J.P. Morgan on accelerator programs investing more than $80 million in diverse founders across the US.
Notable portfolio
Techstars' 29 portfolio unicorns and standout alumni include SendGrid (acquired by Twilio), DigitalOcean, ClassPass, Sphero (formerly Orbotix), Chainalysis, Outreach, Sketchfab, Plated, Bench and Telnyx. The September 2026 portfolio update highlighted Pixxel (Techstars 2019) raising $100 million to expand satellite production.
Partners and team
After a leadership transition, co-founder David Cohen returned as CEO in May 2024. Mentors from companies like HubSpot, Stripe, Google, Nike and Amazon form the heart of the network, alongside more than 10,000 investors and thousands of alumni founders. In 2026 Techstars formalised a strategic partnership with Global Brain to accelerate innovation in Japan and globally.
Programs and resources
Accepted companies receive $220,000 in funding in exchange for 6 percent common stock, plus lifetime access to the Techstars network and perks valued at over $4 million, including $100,000 in AWS credits. Beyond accelerators, Techstars runs Startup Weekend, Startup Week (acquired via UP Global in 2015) and the Founder Catalyst pre-accelerator — the largest founder community infrastructure on the planet.
Why it matters for founders
Techstars remains the highest-leverage three months a pre-seed founder can spend: a modest cheque, but a credential, mentor network and Demo Day that materially change fundraising odds. With a 1–2 percent acceptance rate, apply with sharp customer evidence and clear execution proof — and treat the $4 million+ in perks as a real extension of your runway.
