Healthcare in India is one of the world's great investment stories — and Tata Capital Healthcare Fund (TCHF) has been writing it for over a decade. Sponsored by Tata Capital Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, TCHF is a growth-oriented private equity fund focused exclusively on healthcare and life-sciences companies with significant exposure to India.
The fund's scale has grown with each vintage. TCHF I (2012) raised ₹411 crore (about $70 million); TCHF II (2022) closed at ₹955 crore (about $126 million), drawing commitments from global pharma and medical-equipment companies, development financial institutions, large European institutions — and the Government of India's Self Reliant India (SRI) Fund. Across the two funds TCHF raised roughly $200 million, made 20 investments and delivered 8 exits. The firm has now launched TCHF III (vintage 2026), targeting ₹2,500 crore (about $260 million) including a green-shoe option, and has already achieved its first close.
The investment strategy rests on two themes: domestic healthcare and life-sciences consumption (about 60% of TCHF II's bets) and Indian healthcare competency sold to world markets (the remaining 40%). Sectors span pharmaceuticals, healthcare delivery, medical devices, diagnostics, dialysis and health-tech — with TCHF III stepping up average deal sizes to $20–22 million and targeting IPOs as the preferred liquidity route for over half its exits.
The portfolio is a who's who of Indian healthcare mid-caps: Intas Biopharmaceuticals, Linux Laboratories, Atulaya Healthcare (diagnostics), Noble Plus Pharmacy, Deeptek (AI radiology), Apex Kidney Care, Mumbai Oncocare Centre, Anderson Diagnostics, Sakar Healthcare, Orbicular Pharmaceuticals, Harsoria and Tenet Diagnostics — the first investment from Fund III.
Leadership is deeply sectoral. Founding and Managing Partner Visalakshi Chandramouli — a chemical technologist who began as a research scientist at Cipla and spent over a decade as a top-ranked healthcare equity analyst — leads a 13-member team spanning pharma R&D, investment banking and operations. The fund has been named Healthcare Investor of the Year by Venture Intelligence three years running (2018–2020), plus Healthcare Fund Raise of the Year for 2022.
TCHF also wears its impact credentials openly. Its CARES framework embeds ESG across the investment lifecycle: portfolio companies operate 332 healthcare facilities, delivered 608 million+ products and services across India in a year, and directly benefited 8.3 million people — creating 55 jobs for every $1 million invested, with women forming 24% of the portfolio workforce.
Why it matters for founders
If you are building in Indian healthcare — formulations, diagnostics, devices, delivery or health-tech — TCHF is the most specialised growth-equity partner in the market, with a track record of profitable exits and deep operating networks across pharma and care delivery. TCHF III's ₹2,500 crore is now deploying at $20–22 million average cheque sizes. Come with a business model that can scale at double the sector's growth rate and a credible path to an IPO in five to six years — that is exactly what the fund says it is hunting for.
