Swedish development finance institution Swedfund has committed $35 million to South Asia Growth Fund IV (SAGF IV), a private equity fund targeting growth-stage companies in India working on emissions reduction and climate resilience. The commitment was reported on October 21, 2026.

SAGF IV has a target size of $600 million, and Swedfund's investment is part of an expected first close involving other international development finance institutions and private investors. The fund will focus on sectors including renewable energy, water management and sustainable agriculture, providing long-term growth capital to companies developing climate-friendly products and services.

The fund is managed by GEF Capital Partners, an investment firm focused on environmental and resource-efficiency sectors since 2018, with a dedicated team based in Mumbai. Swedfund has an established relationship with the manager, having previously invested in South Asia Growth Fund II and III and participated in a co-investment in Arya.ag in 2025.

Why climate capital is flowing into startup funding in India

Gunilla Nilsson, Investment Director and Head of Energy & Climate at Swedfund, said India's transition to a sustainable and climate-resilient economy requires significant investment in innovative businesses that can deliver solutions at scale. The fund's strategy centres on growth-stage businesses that can deliver measurable environmental benefits while expanding commercially - a signal that climate is moving from grant territory into mainstream growth equity.

Why it matters for founders

A $600 million climate fund backed by DFIs means growth capital is now chasing Indian climate-tech companies with real unit economics. If you are building in renewable energy supply chains, water or sustainable agriculture, the next 12-18 months are the window to get on GEF-style growth funds' radars.
