SphitiCap, launched by Sphitigram Ventures Pvt. Ltd., is a founder-focused early-stage venture capital firm with a mission that stands out in India's metro-centric startup ecosystem: to decentralise enterprise growth to India's Tier-II and Tier-III cities. The name "Sphiti" derives from Sanskrit, meaning growth and prosperity — reflecting the firm's belief that world-class companies can be built outside Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi.
The firm's thesis is community-led and founder-focused, investing across growth, impact, and sustainability themes. Rather than clustering in metro startup hubs, SphitiCap actively seeks founders in grassroots and emerging markets, betting that the next wave of Indian entrepreneurship will come from cities that traditional VCs overlook. This is not just marketing — it is a structural investment thesis about where India's growth will come from.
SphitiCap announced a $500 million maiden fund target in October 2022, with a first close of $125–150 million expected in that quarter. However, no source has confirmed a final close, and one industry source noted the raise included soft commitments. The $500 million figure should therefore be treated as an aspiration/target, not a closed amount. The firm invests from seed to Series A, with an average ticket size of around $10 million according to industry coverage.
The firm is sector-agnostic but has identified 10 focus sectors: cleantech, fintech, deep-tech, space-tech and defence, agri-tech, prop-tech, SaaS, digital media, D2C, and logistics and supply chain. This breadth reflects the reality that Tier-II/III founders build across sectors, not just in the SaaS and fintech categories that dominate metro VC.
SphitiCap was founded by Managing Partners Pallav Kumar Singh and Mayank Mehra. Mehra also founded angel network Ultiwise Ventures and fintech PayVeda — the latter creating a potential conflict of interest worth noting, as SphitiCap itself invested $11.5 million in PayVeda.
The firm's disclosed investments, all reported by VCCircle as the first three bets from its maiden fund, include ClearDekho ($2.3 million, an eyewear retail brand — its first investment), PayVeda ($11.5 million, fintech), and Corrit Electric ($9 million / ~Rs 72 crore Series A, electric bikes). These early bets span retail, fintech, and EVs — consistent with the firm's sector breadth.
Why it matters for founders
If you are building from a Tier-II or Tier-III city and feel overlooked by metro-centric VCs who rarely travel beyond Bengaluru and Mumbai, SphitiCap was designed for you. Their grassroots thesis is genuine. However, note that the $500M fund target remains unconfirmed as a closed amount — ask directly about fund status and dry powder before engaging deeply. And be aware of the PayVeda co-founder overlap when evaluating governance.
