Startup funding in India reached for the stars this week: Ahmedabad-based spacetech startup SpectraGaze Systems raised ₹3.7 crore in a seed round led by GVFL, with participation from angel investors. The round was announced on October 23, 2026.
Indigenous eyes for space, defence and science
Founded in 2023 by former ISRO scientist Arup Banerjee, SpectraGaze develops indigenous optical imaging sensors and electro-optical payloads for space, defence and scientific applications. This is deeptech with customers already in hand: ISRO, the Physical Research Laboratory and Kaynes Technology all count as buyers.
The startup has delivered an infrared detector and test system to ISRO and secured an image sensor development contract for its HRSAT programme. It is also developing a hyperspectral imaging camera for a 3U satellite — exactly the kind of mission-critical hardware India has historically imported.
Where the money goes
The funding will support product development, engineering expansion, testing infrastructure and existing customer projects. GVFL's backing puts one of India's earliest institutional investors behind a team building space-grade imaging at home, at a moment when private space investment is widening beyond rockets and satellites into sensors and surface infrastructure.
Why it matters for founders
SpectraGaze's edge was customers before capital — delivering hardware to ISRO made this seed round a scaling story, not a science experiment. For deeptech founders, one paid government or enterprise contract beats a hundred investor meetings.
