Speciale Invest is a Chennai-based venture capital firm that has built its name on being the first institutional cheque into India's hardest technology companies. Founded in 2017 by Vishesh Rajaram and Arjun Rao, it has grown from a ₹60 crore debut fund into one of India's largest dedicated pre-seed and seed deeptech investors, with more than $140 million under management.

Investment thesis

Speciale backs founders building from first principles — companies whose edge comes from science and engineering rather than distribution playbooks. Its stated mission is to fund sovereign technology and globally scalable intellectual property originating from India: orbital launch vehicles, quantum-secure communication, in-orbit infrastructure, next-generation electrolyzers. Alongside its India core, it has backed startups based in the USA, Israel and Singapore.

Sectors & stages

Investments are at pre-seed and seed, across deeptech hardware and software. Software: AI-led software and SaaS, data infrastructure, cloud infrastructure and developer tools. Hardware: space technology, advanced manufacturing, robotics, propulsion and micro-electronics, novel energy, planetary health, human longevity and synthetic biology. Few Indian funds explicitly embrace the multi-year, capital-intensive product cycles this mandate demands.

Fund size & cheque size

Fund I (₹60 crore, 2018) backed 18 companies with average deals under $0.5 million. Fund II closed at ₹300 crore in April 2022, writing $0.5–1 million cheques. Fund III closed in August 2025 at ₹600 crore, oversubscribed against a ₹500 crore target, and will make 18–20 investments through 2029. Initial cheques run ₹7–10 crore with room for larger commitments, and roughly ₹300 crore — about half the fund — is reserved for follow-on rounds. The Economic Times reported in early 2026 that Speciale was preparing a second growth-stage fund targeting ₹1,500 crore.

Notable portfolio companies

Speciale says it has been the first institutional investor in several category-defining Indian deeptech companies: Agnikul Cosmos (orbital-class launch vehicles), The ePlane Company (electric aerial mobility), GalaxEye (multi-sensor satellite intelligence), QNu Labs (quantum cybersecurity), Fermbox (synthetic biology for industrial bioprocessing), Inspecity (in-orbit infrastructure) and Newtrace (green-hydrogen electrolyzers). Also named: Ultraviolette, Astrogate Labs and CynLr. The firm has reported nine successful M&A exits.

Partners & team

Founding partner Vishesh Rajaram serves as managing partner alongside co-founder and general partner Arjun Rao. Vijay Jacob, a founding member of NewQuest Capital, joined as general partner to lead growth-stage investments, and Krishnaswamy Srinivasan came on board as general partner and chief financial officer. Vishnu Rajeev was elevated to investment partner in early 2026 after several years leading early-stage deal evaluation and portfolio support.

Programs run

Speciale runs Beyond Incremental, a podcast hosted by the firm's general partners with interviews of entrepreneurs, investors and technology leaders — a window into how the partnership thinks about deep technology. There is no publicly listed accelerator or batch programme.

Credits & perks

Not publicly disclosed. The firm does not publish a standardised credits, cloud or perks package for founders.

How founders can approach them

Speciale invites pitches directly through its website, specialeinvest.com, and lists a public contact for introductions. What it looks for is consistent: pre-seed "zero to one" ventures rooted in deep science or engineering, founders reasoning from first principles, technology with global applicability, and teams prepared for the long gestation cycles of hard tech. Warm introductions from portfolio founders or co-investors move fastest.

Why it matters for founders

If you are building genuinely hard technology — rockets, quantum hardware, synbio, advanced manufacturing — Speciale is the rare Indian fund that treats pre-seed deeptech as its core craft, and with ₹300 crore reserved for follow-ons, it can keep backing you through the long road to productisation.
