The firm

Founded in 2005 by Bijan Sabet, Paul Conway, Santo Politi and Todd Dagres, Spark Capital is a multi-stage, generalist venture capital firm with operations in San Francisco, New York and Boston. It invests across consumer internet, enterprise software, gaming, infrastructure technologies, hardware, semiconductors, crypto, fintech and AI — and today manages over $12 billion in assets.

Thesis and sectors

Spark runs no narrow thesis: it backs exceptional founders at the earliest stages and follows them with growth capital. The firm is famous for co-investing — many of its early picks, including Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare, were made jointly with Union Square Ventures. It also takes a founder-friendly stance on talent mobility: Spark says its portfolio companies do not use non-compete agreements, which it sees as a drag on startup growth.

Funds

Spark has raised eight early-stage funds — from $265 million in 2005 to $700 million in both 2021 and 2024 — and five growth funds, including $1.4 billion vehicles raised in 2021 and 2024. The two-fund structure lets it lead a seed round and keep funding winners through the growth stage.

Landmark portfolio wins

The hit list is formidable. Spark led Twitter's Series B in 2008, with Bijan Sabet taking a board seat and later helping steward the company's leadership transitions. It was an early investor in Tumblr, sold to Yahoo for $1.1 billion, returning roughly $192 million to Spark. It backed Oculus VR through Series A and B before Facebook's roughly $2 billion acquisition. And Spark led Anthropic's Series C in 2022 through partner Yasmin Razavi — a $75 million cheque reportedly worth $3 billion as the AI boom took off. Other portfolio names include Slack, Discord, Coinbase, Affirm, Plaid, Postmates and Cruise.

Partners

Spark's leadership includes general partners Alex Finkelstein, Nabeel Hyatt, Jeremy Philips, Santo Politi, Yasmin Razavi, Will Reed, Bijan Sabet and Kevin Thau.

What founders get

Spark positions itself as a long-term partner from first cheque through growth rounds. Its calling card is conviction before consensus: a Series B in Twitter before it was obvious, a Series C in Anthropic before the AI mania, a seed-era belief in crypto through Coinbase. For founders, the pitch is simple — a generalist team that moves early and stays late.

Why it matters for founders

Spark is a firm to approach when your ambition is category-defining rather than incremental. Its record — Twitter, Slack, Discord, Anthropic — shows a team willing to be the first institutional believer and to follow on with real capital. Multi-stage backing from one firm can mean fewer fundraising cycles and a partner that understands your whole journey.
