The Sony Innovation Fund is the corporate venture capital initiative of Sony Group Corporation, operated by its wholly owned subsidiary Sony Ventures Corporation. Launched in 2016, the initiative marked its 10th anniversary in 2026, and in April 2026 Sony announced the first closing of its fourth flagship vehicle, Sony Innovation Fund 4 L.P. The fund targets startups with strong strategic affinity to Sony's businesses — entertainment, gaming, music, imaging, fintech and deep tech — and brings portfolio companies access to Sony's proprietary technologies, joint development and business alliances. Its India activity is real and growing, spanning gaming, fintech and mobility.

Investment thesis

Sony Ventures invests where startups can plug into Sony's own capabilities: entertainment and gaming (PlayStation, Sony Music, Sony Pictures), AI and robotics, fintech, healthtech, deep tech, mobility and environmental technologies. CEO Kazuhito Hadano has said the fourth fund will take "a more selective approach," focusing on areas with the strongest strategic alignment to Sony Group's businesses while using Sony's internal resources to accelerate portfolio growth. The fund backs startups from pre-seed through Series C.

Funds, stages and cheque sizes

Sony Innovation Fund 4 L.P. completed its first closing in April 2026 with limited partners including MUFG Bank, the Development Bank of Japan, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Sony Bank and Sony Group itself, targeting a final size above ¥20 billion (about $135 million). That would take total assets under management across the Sony Innovation Fund platform past ¥85 billion. Earlier vehicles include the Innovation Growth Fund (2019, for mid-to-later stage), Sony Innovation Fund 3 (2022), Sony Innovation Fund: Environment (2020) and Sony Innovation Fund: Africa (2023), a $10 million fund for African entertainment startups.

Notable portfolio

The India portfolio is led by three names. STAN, the homegrown mobile-first social gaming platform co-founded by Parth Chadha, brought Sony Innovation Fund into its ongoing Series A, which has reached $10.5 million to date, with Hadano calling STAN's creator-gamer ecosystem "an inclusive gaming community" aligned to Sony's vision. WeRize, the Bengaluru fintech distributing financial products across smaller Indian cities through 20,000+ local financial advisors in 5,000+ towns, has had Sony Innovation Fund lead a 2026 round after backing its earlier $15.5 million 2022 raise. Zoomcar took $30 million as part of a $100 million Series D in 2020 with participation from Sony Innovation Fund's mobility-focused vehicle.

People

Kazuhito Hadano is CEO of Sony Ventures Corporation. Toshimoto Mitomo, Sony Group's chief strategy officer, oversees the open-innovation strategy the fund serves. The fund operates through dedicated investment professionals across Sony's global offices.

Programmes / credits and perks

The fund's core founder programme is collaboration with Sony itself: access to proprietary technologies, joint development initiatives and strategic business alliances, plus the Sony Startup Acceleration Program, which offers portfolio companies advisory support, promotional backing within the Sony Group and co-creation space. It does not publicise startup credits or perks programmes.

How to engage

Sony Ventures looks for startups with genuine strategic overlap — gaming, entertainment tech, imaging and sensors, fintech, robotics, healthtech and climate. Indian founders in gaming and creator-economy plays (STAN) or Bharat-focused fintech (WeRize) fit the demonstrated pattern. A pitch should show not just market potential but a concrete collaboration thesis: what could you build with Sony's technology, content or distribution?

Why it matters for founders

Sony Innovation Fund is that rare corporate VC where the strategic value is tangible — PlayStation-scale gaming, world-class imaging tech, and a genuine open-innovation culture. For Indian founders in gaming, entertainment or deep tech, it is already an active India investor, not a tourist.
