The firm

Somerset Indus Capital Partners is a Mumbai-headquartered healthcare-focused private equity firm founded in 2011 by Avinash Kenkare and Mayur Sirdesai. With around $500 million in assets under management across three funds, it is one of the few India-dedicated funds that does nothing but healthcare — and it does it in the places others overlook.

Thesis and sweet spot

Somerset's thesis is built around India's "missing middle" — the vast population beyond the metros where healthcare access gaps are widest. Fund III focuses on Tier II and Tier III markets, backing scalable businesses delivering affordable, accessible, quality care across healthcare delivery, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics and allied sectors.

The firm writes $15–40 million growth-equity cheques — controlling or influential minority stakes — and through co-investment syndication with its LP network can flex to $60–80 million transactions. Its newest hunting grounds include preventive care, OPD-linked insurance, healthcare financing, embedded insurance solutions, value-driven generics, India-focused MedTech innovation, and diagnostics platforms improving access and standardisation beyond metro markets. It backs mostly first-generation entrepreneurs, and plans roughly 10 investments from Fund III by the end of 2026.

Fund III

In March 2026 Somerset closed Fund III at $288 million, beating its $250 million target. Backers include development finance institutions, global investment firms, domestic financial institutions, insurance companies, funds of funds, family offices and impact investors across Europe, the United States and Southeast Asia. The fund has already deployed into three companies: Cyrix Healthcare (medtech servicing), Printmann Offset (pharmaceutical packaging) and NU Hospitals (a nephrology and urology single-specialty chain).

Track record and notable portfolio

The numbers are eye-catching: Fund I delivered approximately 4.0x DPI (distributions to paid-in capital), and Fund II completed its first realisation in September 2025 at roughly 4x MOIC. Earlier portfolio names include Ujala Cygnus (affordable hospital care in north India), Sterling Hospitals, Krsnaa Diagnostics, GenWorks Health and Blue Star E&E's MedTech solutions business. The firm has logged 10 exits in total, including Apex Hospitals (Jaipur), Hexagon Nutrition and Chayagraphics.
