Investment thesis

Soma Capital describes itself as "a fund built by founders, for founders" focused on software. Founded in 2015 by managing partner Aneel Ranadive, the San Francisco firm's mission is to "build deep friendships day 1 with brilliant superhumans pushing humanity forward." Ranadive brings a non-traditional venture background: he is the son of Vivek Ranadive, founder of enterprise software company TIBCO (sold to Vista Equity Partners for $4.3 billion), and his family owns the Sacramento Kings NBA team — relationships the firm says give it CEO-level access across the Fortune 500.

Sectors and stages

Soma is an early-stage, seed-focused investor with a strong software bias: B2B SaaS, artificial intelligence, fintech, clean-tech, frontier-tech, proptech, crypto, health tech and consumer, according to PitchBook. It is unusually concentrated in Y Combinator — backing more than 130 YC graduates between Q1 2020 and Q3 2023 — and invests globally across the US, Latin America, India, Canada, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, Israel, ANZ and MENA.

Fund size and cheque size

Soma's current fund size is not publicly disclosed. Third-party estimates of the fund's size conflict, so it is safest to treat it as undisclosed. On cheque size, the firm averages $100K–$300K, with the ability to write larger cheques up to around $2.5 million as a sweet spot, and it typically does not lead rounds.

Notable portfolio companies

By its own account, Soma has seeded more than 20 unicorns worth roughly $100 billion combined, often writing the first cheque. The names it lists include Deel, Rippling, Ramp, Cruise, Rappi, Ironclad, Human Interest, Razorpay and Lambda School.

Key people

Aneel Ranadive is the managing partner and founder, a serial entrepreneur who built consumer social and mobile apps before founding the firm. The firm's partners and advisors are founders and operators from billion-dollar software companies, and the Ranadive family's sports ownership gives the firm an unusual network spanning technology and professional sport.

Programmes: the Soma Fellowship

Soma runs a distinctive Soma Fellowship for early-stage builders, linked from its own website. The fellowship offers founders $100K–$1M on uncapped SAFEs with 0% equity, plus office hours, events and community access. It is not a credits or perks programme, and the firm publishes no cloud-credits offering.

Why it matters for founders

Soma is tailor-made for software founders who want an early believer rather than a lead investor — its first-cheque record in 20+ unicorns is the credential. The 0%-equity Soma Fellowship is also one of the most founder-friendly programmes in venture. Pitch via their site if you have a strong software product and global ambition.
