Few investors arrive with the weight of Silver Lake behind them. Founded in 1999 by Jim Davidson, David Roux, Roger McNamee and Glenn Hutchins, the Menlo Park-based firm describes itself as "the global leader in technology investing" — and its scale supports the claim. Its website reports around $126B in approximate assets under management and committed capital, an aggregate portfolio enterprise value above $1T, portfolio companies generating roughly $363B in annual revenue, and more than 415,000 people employed across its holdings. The firm is led by co-chief executives Egon Durban and Greg Mondre, with Ken Hao as chairman.

The firm's thesis is technology and nothing else: it invests in, builds and grows technology and technology-enabled companies, operating on a "portfolio first" philosophy of partnering with exceptional management teams. Its mandate spans semiconductors, cloud computing, IT infrastructure, software, e-commerce, cybersecurity, transaction processing, fintech, financial services, media and entertainment. Structurally it is flexible — leveraged buyouts, minority growth investments and PIPEs (private investments in public equity) — and its Alpine strategy makes structured equity and debt investments.

On fundraising, Silver Lake has broken its own records. Silver Lake Partners VII raised $20.5B in May 2024, its largest fund to date, topping the $20B fund raised in 2021; earlier, Silver Lake Partners V closed at $15B in 2017. Few private-equity firms outside the mega-cap generalists raise at this scale, and almost none with a pure technology focus.

For Indian founders, Silver Lake's India chapter is short but dramatic. It was the first financial investor into Jio Platforms after Facebook, paying Rs 10,202.55 crore for a 2.08% stake in 2020, according to the Economic Times — a deal that signalled to global capital that Indian technology infrastructure was investible at the largest scale. The same year it led a $500M round in Byju's at a reported $10.8B valuation alongside Tiger Global and General Atlantic, and it has also invested in Reliance Retail. In the sources checked, Silver Lake has no verified India office; its India investments have been led through its global technology mandate rather than a dedicated on-the-ground team.

The leadership story matters because Silver Lake bets on people as much as platforms. Durban and Mondre have run the firm since December 2019; Joe Osnoss and Christian Lucas serve as managing partners. It is an institution built for large, complex, often contested deals — the sort of capital that backs category leaders rather than early experiments.

Why it matters for founders

Silver Lake does not do seed or Series A — but if you are building a large-scale technology or tech-enabled business in India, it is the benchmark for what late-stage global capital looks like. Its Jio bet reset how the world prices Indian technology assets, which flows downstream into every valuation conversation founders have today.
