SIIC — the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre at IIT Kanpur (siicincubator.com) is one of India's oldest technology business incubators, established in 2000 as the SIDBI Innovation & Incubation Centre. It backs early-stage technology start-ups across agritech, AI/ML, cleantech, cybersecurity and fintech, defence, energy storage, IoT, medtech and biotech, and quantum domains.
Track record
Per IIT Kanpur, SIIC has incubated 120+ start-ups that have raised "hundreds of crores" and generated 3,000+ jobs. Named incubatees include Nocca Robotics, Curadev Biopharma, Weather-Risk Advisory, PHOOL (HelpUsGreen) — the floral-waste recycling venture — GeoKno, E-spin Nanotech and Aarav Unmanned Systems.
Programmes
SIIC runs the IAN–IIT Kanpur Future Tech Accelerator with the Indian Angel Network (launched on National Startup Day 2023; eight indigenous start-ups shortlisted in its first edition), the CiTe Civic Tech Innovation Launchpad with the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and Capri Global, and Mission Bharat O2 — an indigenous oxygen-concentrator and oxygen-plant effort backed by Ansys CSR support during the pandemic years. Its partner roster spans HDFC Bank, ICICI Securities, Citi, Standard Chartered, SBI Foundation, InfoEdge, Capri Global, AWS, Freshworks and Premji Invest on the corporate side, and DSIR, DBT, MeitY, DST, BIRAC, SIDBI, MSME, iDEX and Start in UP on the government side, plus academic and hospital partners including KGMU, SGPGI and Narayana Health.
Leadership
Prof Amitabha Bandyopadhyay is Professor-in-charge of SIIC, and Dr Nikhil Agarwal leads FIRST and the AIIDE Centre of Excellence, IIT Kanpur's allied deep-tech entities.
Fund size
As an incubator, its corpus is not publicly disclosed.
SIIC's partner bench is unusually broad for an academic incubator. Corporate names on its site include HDFC Bank, ICICI Securities, Citi, Standard Chartered, SBI Foundation, InfoEdge, Capri Global, Pernod Ricard, REC, NTT Data, Ansys, AWS, Freshworks and Premji Invest; government linkages run through DSIR, DBT, MeitY, DST, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, BIRAC, NIDHI, the Government of UP, Start in UP, ICMR, iDEX, SIDBI and MSME; and academic and hospital partners include KGMU, SGPGI and Narayana Health, with international ties to the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Toronto Business Development Centre.
Named incubatees beyond the headline names include Weather-Risk Advisory, GeoKno and E-spin Nanotech alongside Nocca Robotics, Curadev Biopharma, PHOOL and Aarav Unmanned Systems — a roster spanning robotics, biopharma, climate data and unmanned systems, reflecting the centre's genuinely sector-agnostic deep-tech mandate.
Why it matters for founders
Deep-tech founders in North India often default to Delhi or Bengaluru programmes. SIIC offers a serious alternative: a quarter-century-old incubator inside an IIT with defence, civic-tech and medtech programme tracks — and a partner bench that runs from BIRAC to Premji Invest.
