The firm
Founded in 2012 by Chris Farmer, SignalFire describes itself as the first VC firm built like a technology company. Instead of leaning on networks and gut feel, it runs on Beacon AI, a proprietary machine-learning platform refined in-house since the firm's launch, which draws on talent data spanning more than 650 million individuals and 80 million organisations worldwide. The firm invests in applied AI companies from pre-seed to Series B.
In April 2025 it closed its largest raise ever: over $1 billion in fresh capital, taking total assets under management to approximately $3 billion — a haul that exceeded the $900 million it raised in 2023 and dwarfed its $53 million debut fund from 2015. New limited partners include CalPERS, the largest pension fund in the US, which reportedly committed $100 million for the first time.
Thesis and sweet spot
SignalFire's thesis is that AI's next frontier isn't invention, it's implementation. It backs only applied AI — companies putting AI to work inside real industries — and deliberately avoids foundation-model builders, which Farmer argues face constant leapfrogging and uncertain defensibility. Key sectors include healthcare and pharma, consumer, infrastructure and developer tools, and cybersecurity, alongside other enterprise verticals.
The firm aims to be the "first check" for applied AI startups, leading pre-seed and seed rounds and then using its scale to keep backing winners as they grow — Farmer told TechCrunch it has invested $100 million into some companies, capital most seed-focused firms cannot deploy. That combination — very young companies, at institutional scale — is what attracted giant pension and sovereign LPs.
Notable portfolio
Early bets include Grammarly, last valued at $13 billion, Grow Therapy, which raised an $88 million Series C from Sequoia, and EvenUp, now worth over $1 billion. Other names on the roster include Frame.io, Stampli and Horizon3.ai. The pace hasn't slowed: it led Vector's $10 million Series A, backed Solid's $20 million raise and doubled down on Solace's $130 million Series C.
People
Founder and CEO Chris Farmer built the firm around what was, in the early 2010s, a radical idea: that data analysis could sit at the core of early-stage investing. CTO and partner Ilya Kirnos leads the AI-native infrastructure behind Beacon, while partner Wayne Hu has become one of the firm's public voices on applied AI. The team pairs sector-focused investors with in-house operators spanning data science, recruiting, PR and go-to-market.
Programs, credits and perks
SignalFire's platform is its perk. Portfolio companies get Beacon-powered tools for hiring, customer insights, data science and go-to-market strategy, plus expert advisors and regular skill-building workshops. It runs an AI Lab incubation program aimed at founders at the idea stage, and an Executive-in-Residence (XIR) program that places seasoned operators into new ventures. No public cloud-credit or perk catalogue is disclosed — the pitch is people, data and operational firepower rather than a coupon book.
Why it matters for founders
If you're building applied AI — real workflows, not model weights — SignalFire is one of the few firms that writes early cheques and then has the balance sheet to keep writing them. Beacon gives you a data edge on hiring and customers, but expect a team that thinks like engineers: they'll want deep, hard-to-copy defensibility, not a demo.
