Sierra Ventures is one of Silicon Valley's longest-running early-stage venture firms. Founded in 1982 by Peter Wendell and based in San Mateo, California, the firm invests globally with a focus on Next Generation Enterprise and Emerging Technologies — spanning enterprise software, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and healthcare. With more than four decades of experience and over $2 billion in assets under management, Sierra's motto is "Conviction Before Consensus": backing enterprise founders before the market agrees with them.

The firm raises a new early-stage fund every few years. Its twelfth fund, Sierra Ventures Fund XII, closed at $215 million, earmarked for innovations across enterprise and consumer technology with a particular emphasis on AI and blockchain as horizontal platform technologies. It invests from pre-seed and seed through Series A, typically leading or co-leading early rounds and following on through growth stages, and has been an active early-stage investor in India and China since 2006.

Sierra is run by managing directors Mark Fernandes, Tim Guleri and Ben Yu, with Shashank Saxena joining as a fourth managing partner in 2024 and Shomik Ghosh joining as a partner to strengthen its frontier and applied AI investing.

The firm's early bets included Healtheon, Intuit, Micromuse and StrataCom. More recently it backed Treasure Data, which was acquired by ARM for $600 million in 2018. Recent investments include Auditoria.AI (a $38 million Series B in 2025), Sedai ($20 million, 2025), Podcastle and QuillBot.

Over its history, Sierra has backed more than 100 successful IPO and M&A exits across its venture partnerships, supported by a platform of entrepreneurs, Fortune 1000 CXOs, operational executives and deep domain experts.

Sierra's defining platform asset is its CXO Advisory Board — a consortium of more than seventy-five Fortune 1000 CIOs, CTOs, CDOs, CMOs and CISOs across financial services, healthcare, retail and technology that has advised portfolio companies since 2006. Members act as an extension of the investment team, giving founders feedback and early access to enterprise buying decision-makers. The firm also runs an Annual CXO Summit, an AI Lab Forum and an EPL Council, stitching its portfolio directly into the enterprise buyer network.

The firm does not publicly advertise startup credit or perk programmes.

Why it matters for founders

For enterprise and AI founders, Sierra's value is distribution, not just dollars. The CXO network gives portfolio companies a warm path into Fortune 1000 buyers — a decisive edge for early-stage B2B. It is a strong fit for technical teams building enterprise infrastructure who need customer introductions as much as capital.
