Homegrown AI unicorn Sarvam AI has made its first high-profile C-suite hire, appointing Sashikumar Sreedharan, the former managing director of Google Cloud India, as President and Chief Business Officer. The move, announced in early October 2026, strengthens Sarvam's business leadership as it expands its enterprise AI operations around its full-stack sovereign AI platform.

Sreedharan brings deep cloud and enterprise technology experience. According to his professional profile, he served as managing director of Google Cloud India from July 2025 until October 2026, after serving as chief operating officer of Google Cloud APAC from September 2023 to July 2025. Before Google, he was managing director at Microsoft India from February 2018 to September 2023, where he led the enterprise commercial business, and earlier CEO and managing director at Happiest Minds.

At Google Cloud India, Sreedharan led the expansion of sovereign cloud capabilities in the country, catering to organisations with stringent requirements around data security, control and isolation — experience that maps directly to Sarvam's sovereign AI pitch to enterprises, developers and government organisations.

The appointment follows a significant funding milestone: in June 2026, Sarvam AI announced the first close of its $300 million Series B round, raising $234 million at a post-money valuation of $1.5 billion, with HCLTech as the lead strategic investor and existing backers Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners continuing to invest. Sarvam is building products across voice agents, speech-to-text, translation, document digitisation and enterprise applications, and recently launched Sarvam Vision 2.1 for reading documents in English and 22 Indian languages.

Sarvam has also been building its research bench: AI researcher Devendra Chaplot, a founding member of Mistral AI and Thinking Machine Labs, joined as an adviser. Meanwhile, Amit Kumar, managing director of Digital Natives Business at Google Cloud India, has been named interim India head of Google Cloud.

Why it matters for founders

Sarvam's hire signals where India's AI capital is moving next: from research to revenue. A commercial heavyweight of Sreedharan's calibre joining a $1.5B-valued AI startup tells founders that enterprise AI demand in India is real — and that sovereign, Indic-language AI is the bet the biggest players are placing on it.
