Homegrown AI model startup Sarvam is in talks to raise $250-300 million at a $3 billion valuation, according to people aware of the discussions, ETtech reported on October 13, 2026. The raise would double the valuation from just four months ago and potentially make Sarvam India's most valuable AI startup.

The discussions with large domestic enterprises and institutions are early, with the intent of keeping significant shareholding with Indian entities. Both the amount and the valuation could change.

The recap is striking: in June 2026, Sarvam had secured more than $300 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, with HCLTech leading the round and Nvidia and IndiGo Ventures participating in a $75 million extension. The startup, founded by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, builds Indian-language AI models and applications for government agencies, banks and insurers. Customers include LIC, SBI Life, IDFC First Bank, Tata Capital and Cred, and Maharashtra has approved deployment of Sarvam's Indus AI workspace across departments for drafting, translation and document analysis, with government data hosted within India.

The capital is being earmarked for larger models and computing infrastructure: a planned trillion-parameter model and a San Francisco office to recruit researchers. The company recently hired Sashikumar Sreedharan, Google Cloud India's former head, as president and chief business officer.

Why it matters for founders

A $3 billion valuation for an Indian foundation-model company, four months after $1.5 billion, shows sovereign AI is commanding the largest cheques in the ecosystem. If you are building AI infrastructure or enterprise applications, the application-layer thesis — Indian developers, Indian data, Indian enterprise customers — is where the capital is clustering.
