Samara Capital is one of India's leading mid-market private equity firms, founded in 2007. The firm focuses on long-term business ownership and value creation, partnering with entrepreneurs and management teams to unlock the full potential of their businesses. Since inception it has invested over USD 2 billion, with more than INR 10,000 crore deployed across a portfolio of over 25 companies. Its backers include high-quality institutional investors and family offices from across the globe.

Investment thesis

Samara runs a control-oriented, mid-market buyout strategy with deep operating capabilities. Its playbook is to buy or back businesses ranked among the top three in their sector or category, then drive transformation through a structured operational excellence framework — appointing professional leadership, professionalising governance and compounding growth over long hold periods. The firm's own materials stress capital preservation, intellectual integrity and a frugal, business-owner mindset.

Sectors & stages

Four core sectors: consumer/retail, healthcare/pharma, financial services and business services/technology. The firm writes majority buyout cheques and minority growth capital (primary or secondary), targeting market leaders riding unorganised-to-organised shifts and rising penetration of products and services.

Fund & cheque sizes

Fund size and standard cheque sizes are not publicly disclosed.

Notable portfolio

Samara completed the final exit from its Fund II with the sale of SMS Integrated Facility Services, delivering a 25% IRR across all investments in the fund — a turnaround built around CEO Tarun Ramrakhiani, whom Samara appointed in 2021. The firm also orchestrated the transformation of Agro Tech Foods Limited into Sundrop Brands with the acquisition of Del Monte Foods Private Limited. Most recently, in September 2026, Samara agreed to acquire stakes in Associated Road Carriers (ARC) and Calyx Container Terminals — ARC is one of India's largest B2B road transporters with 600+ branches and around 3,500 trucks daily, while Calyx runs a licensed container freight station near Chennai Port — to build an integrated domestic-plus-EXIM logistics platform. The combined businesses generated about ₹2,140 crore in revenue in FY2025–26, with Mint reporting an investment of roughly ₹1,200 crore (terms undisclosed by the firm).

Partners & team

The firm is led by a cohesive team of managing directors including Anchit Gupta and Abhishek Kabra, with a leadership culture that emphasises identifying, attracting and nurturing talent across both the firm and its portfolio companies.

Programs run

Samara runs no accelerator or founder program; its value-add comes through its operating framework embedded inside portfolio companies.

How to approach

Samara is a buyout house, not a seed investor — outreach makes sense for established businesses (typically among the top three in their category) exploring majority stake sales, management buyouts or growth capital. Warm introductions through investment bankers or sector advisers work best.

Why it matters for founders

If you are running a profitable, category-leading mid-market business and want a partner that behaves like a business owner — not a quarterly report-chaser — Samara's 25% IRR Fund II track record and operator bench make it a serious contender for majority partnerships and management buyouts.
