Some of the smartest early-stage fintech capital in Asia comes from an unexpected place: a Japanese credit-card company. Saison Capital is the corporate venture arm of Credit Saison, the Tokyo-listed consumer finance group (about $30 billion in AUM, per Saison's own site). Launched in 2019 with a $55 million fund, it invests from pre-seed to Series B across Southeast Asia and India.
The thesis is crisp: embedded finance — backing ambitious founders solving big problems, with a focus on non-fintech companies expanding into fintech, and on ecosystems that distribute financial services to the underbanked. The fund is officially sector-agnostic, but financial inclusion is its gravitational centre. Initial cheques run up to $1 million, at a pace of six to eight new companies a year — and the team is explicit that it plays the long game, supporting founders "from seed to Series A, B, and beyond".
India is firmly in the mandate. Recent Indian bets include Bengaluru-based NBFC fintech Techfino, which raised ₹65 crore from Saison Capital alongside Stellaris Venture Partners to scale secured MSME lending, and Tamil Nadu fintech Mylapay, whose ₹4.6 crore seed round Saison led. The firm is also a limited partner in regional VC funds including Antler, East Ventures, CyberAgent Ventures, STRIVE and BEENEXT — giving it a wide lens on the ecosystem it invests in.
The team is deliberately operator-heavy. Managing Partner Kosuke Mori launched the fund in 2019; partners such as Chris Sirisereepaph and principals like Chia Jeng Yang all come from operating backgrounds, and the firm prides itself on rolling up its sleeves for founders. Saison Capital also publishes serious ecosystem research — its State of ESOPs in India studies are among the most-cited founder resources on startup equity in the region.
For portfolio companies, the perks shelf is unusually deep for an early-stage fund: $25,000 in AWS credits, $1,500 in Stripe fee credits, up to $100,000 in Google Cloud credits, up to 90% off HubSpot, 20% off Deel, Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub access, plus Qapita, Aspire, Mixpanel and Lark Pro benefits.
Why it matters for founders
If you are an Indian founder building anything that touches financial services — lending, payments, or a non-fintech product with a fintech wedge — Saison Capital brings something rare: patient Japanese corporate capital, genuine operating help, and a parent company that understands consumer finance at massive scale. Cheques up to $1 million at pre-seed to Series B, plus a perks stack that meaningfully cuts your burn. The trade-off is pace: this is a deliberate, relationship-driven investor, not a spray-and-pray seed fund.
