Founded in 2011 by James Tan and Wang Yunming under the name QuestVC, Quest Ventures is one of Singapore's most established seed-stage venture capital firms. Rebranded as Quest Ventures in 2017, the firm invests at the seed and Series A stages in the digital economy across Southeast Asia and Central Asia, and is led by Managing Partner James Tan together with partners Goh Yiping and Jeffrey Seah.
Thesis and investment focus
Quest Ventures runs an overarching 'digital economy' strategy covering artificial intelligence, e-commerce and marketplaces, entertainment, finance, food, insurance, logistics, media, property, sports, and the Islamic digital economy. Beyond venture investing, it runs an enterprise innovation initiative with Silicon Valley's Applied Innovation Institute that drives digital transformation for large corporates — its client list has included Coca-Cola, HP, Nissan, and Tencent. The firm also operates an Impact Capital arm, which it describes as the first environment, social and governance strategy by a venture firm in Asia, supporting financial inclusion, gender, healthcare, and education initiatives. The firm says its portfolio now exceeds 150 venture-backed companies operating in more than 150 cities across Asia.
Funds and track record
Quest Ventures Asia Fund II announced a first close of US$50 million in April 2020, anchored by two institutional investors: Pavilion Capital (owned by Temasek) and QazTech Ventures, the Kazakhstan sovereign wealth fund. The fund targets post-seed and Series A investments with cheques between US$500,000 and US$1 million, across Southeast Asia and emerging Asia — with expansion into Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Central Asia. The firm's first fund backed more than 50 companies, including breakout names such as Carousell, ShopBack, 99.co, Carro, StyleTheory, SGAG and its Malaysian and Philippines versions, Glife, and Xfers. Quest Ventures has also worked with public agencies: Enterprise Singapore appointed the firm under the Startup Singapore programme to make seed-stage investments in Singaporean startups, and it has run an accelerator in Kazakhstan and a social-enterprise accelerator in Singapore with raiSE.
What founders get
Founders pitching Quest Ventures should know it thinks in ecosystems, not just cheques — its enterprise network plugs startups directly into regional corporates, and its impact and Central Asia programmes open doors most seed funds cannot. The partners all came up as operators before becoming investors, which shapes a hands-on, value-add style.
Why it matters for founders
Quest Ventures is a natural first call for seed and post-seed founders building digital-economy businesses in Southeast Asia — especially those who can benefit from corporate partnerships or have an eye on Central Asia expansion. If your startup touches marketplaces, fintech, AI, or consumer internet, this is a fund that has seen the movie before and knows the characters.
