India's startup funding market grew choosier in the third quarter of 2026 — and venture debt firms were the busiest chequebooks in the room. Inc42's Q3 investor leaderboard, published October 6, puts Stride Ventures at the top with 38 deals, followed by Alteria Capital with 31.
The headline numbers tell the story of concentration: Indian startups raised $2.2 billion in Q3 2026, up 5% from $2.1 billion a year ago, even as the number of deals fell 13% to 210. The pool of active investors shrank 24% year-on-year to 511 from 676 — fewer funds, backing fewer startups, with more capital per deal.
Among equity investors, 3one4 Capital led with 19 investments, followed by Rainmatter (16), IvyCap Ventures (15) and Antler (14). Google emerged as the third most active investor overall, backing 20 startups through its Google for Startups Accelerator: India 2026 cohort, chosen from nearly 2,500 applications.
Some notable markers: Stride Ventures — with seven debt funds across India, the GCC, the UK and Europe — backed names like Branch, FreshToHome and GIVA, and plans to deploy $1 billion across global credit markets over the next few years. Alteria Capital backed Curefoods, Ultrahuman, Yubi, River Mobility and Miraggio. And 3one4 Capital is gearing up to launch its fifth fund with a $225 million target corpus aimed at AI and SaaS, enterprise automation, fintech, deeptech and consumer internet.
AJVC, founded by Aviral Bhatnagar, backed 13 startups in the quarter, while Finvolve and InnoVen Capital (14 each) kept venture debt firmly on top as the quarter's most prominent source of startup capital.
Why it matters for founders
Q3 proved that capital is concentrating: fewer active investors, fewer deals, slightly more money. That means the bar for equity rounds keeps rising, while venture debt firms are the most active investors in the country — if you have revenue and runway needs, debt is no longer a side option, it's the main lane. Build relationships with the busy 500 now, before you need the cheque.
