Playfair Capital is one of London's most distinctive early-stage funds — a venture firm that does exactly one thing: pre-seed investing. Based in Clerkenwell, London, Playfair invests across the UK and Europe with what it calls a "high-conviction, low-volume" approach: it makes just six investments a year, reserving the bulk of its time and capital to work closely with each founding team after the cheque is signed.

Thesis and stage

Playfair is sector-agnostic — it backs companies across every vertical as long as there is a technology element — and it is geography-led, investing in founders across the UK and Europe. The firm's defining claim is its 78% pre-seed-to-Series A graduation rate, roughly four times the industry average, which it attributes to selecting few companies and going all-in on them. First cheques range from £100k for angel rounds to £1.5m for the largest pre-seed rounds, with up to £5m per company available across follow-on rounds, of which 60% of each fund is reserved for follow-ons. Playfair co-invests in 100% of its new investments.

Fund size and track record

Playfair invests from its £57m Fund 3. The firm was founded in 2013 by Federico Pirzio-Biroli, who seeded the firm after an angel investing career in which he made 21 investments. In March 2019 it raised a $32m second fund, followed in March 2023 by a $70m third pre-seed fund, taking its total raised to $102m. Since 2013, Playfair's founders have raised more than $3bn of follow-on capital from specialist and multi-stage funds.

Notable portfolio and exits

Playfair's portfolio includes three unicorns — Stripe, Andela and Thought Machine — alongside a strong exits list: Mapillary (acquired by Meta), Ravelin (acquired by Worldpay in 2025), CryptoFacilities (acquired by Kraken), Trouva (acquired by MADE.com), Jukedeck (acquired by ByteDance), Hassle.com (acquired by Helpling), Omnipresent (acquired by Deel), Acasa (acquired by Goodlord) and Gluru (acquired by Dialpad). Programmes

Playfair runs Female Founder Office Hours (FFOH), Europe's largest diversity-led founder initiative, launched in 2019. Each edition matches hundreds of women-led, Europe-based tech startups at the pre-Series A stage with investors for mentoring and pitching sessions. The initiative has delivered more than 9,000 mentoring sessions, and companies that attended have since raised over £1.4bn in disclosed funding. Partners on past editions include Google for Startups and Tech Nation. Applications are open to any tech-based, women-led company headquartered in Europe.

Why it matters for founders

If you are raising pre-seed in the UK or Europe, Playfair is one of the most founder-friendly doors to knock on: a top-three ranking on the Founders Choice VC European leaderboard, tiny annual deal volume (so every founder gets real attention), and a genuine follow-through to Series A. Check whether Female Founder Office Hours is running an edition — a 15-minute session has led to first-round funding for multiple founders.
