Public Investment Fund (PIF) is Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund — and arguably the most consequential pool of state capital on the planet. Established in 1971 by King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and restructured in 2015 into a globally active investment institution, PIF now sits at the centre of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 economic transformation.

Overview & thesis

PIF's mandate is explicit: “to actively invest over the long term to maximize sustainable returns, be the investment partner of choice for global opportunities, and enable the economic development and diversification of the Saudi economy.” Its stated vision is “to be a global investment powerhouse and the world's most impactful investor.” In 2025 alone, PIF accounted for an 11% share of Saudi Arabia's non-oil GDP, with a cumulative $342 billion+ contribution to non-oil GDP and $199 billion+ invested in new domestic projects between 2021 and 2025.

Sectors & stages

Under its 2026–2030 strategy, PIF is concentrating on six ecosystems: travel and tourism, urban development, advanced manufacturing, industrial and logistics, clean energy and renewable infrastructure, and NEOM — priorities its Governor outlined at the Future Investment Initiative in October 2025. Earlier strategy cycles covered 13 strategic sectors. PIF operates across the capital spectrum: majority buyouts, large minority stakes, venture-style tickets, giga-project development, and sovereign-to-sovereign co-investment.

Fund size

PIF's official “Who We Are” page states assets under management of $900 billion+. Independent estimates published in 2026 put the figure around $930–$941 billion, with annual net profit doubling to $17 billion (reported August 2026). Its declared target: $2.67 trillion in assets by 2030.

Notable portfolio

PIF's global portfolio is famously eclectic. It is the majority owner of EV maker Lucid Group since April 2019 — a total outlay of $8 billion for its stake, with a further $550 million injected via Ayar Third Investment Company in April 2026. Its $3.5 billion investment in Uber (July 2016, with a board seat) remains one of venture history's defining sovereign tickets. PIF wholly owns Savvy Games Group, the vehicle behind a SAR 142 billion ($37.8 billion) gaming and esports strategy announced in September 2022, and an 85% stake in Newcastle United, acquired in 2021. Other positions include Jio Platforms, a commitment to SoftBank Vision Fund 1, and fully owned giga-projects NEOM and Red Sea Global. Its Q4 2025 US filing disclosed ~$12.9 billion in directly held listed US equities, including Uber, Lucid and Electronic Arts.

Partners & leadership

PIF's Chairman is His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The fund is run day-to-day by Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who also chairs Saudi Aramco.

Programs & resources

Beyond direct investing, PIF creates entire ecosystems: it launches domestic champions, funds giga-projects from scratch, and anchors co-investment partnerships with global institutional investors. For founders, the practical interface is rarely a single PIF email — it is PIF's portfolio companies, its sector funds, and its joint ventures, which run their own venture and procurement programs.

Why it matters for founders

PIF is the deepest-pocketed sovereign investor in the world, but it rarely writes seed cheques directly. Founders meet PIF through its portfolio — Lucid, Savvy Games Group, Red Sea Global — and through its six 2026–2030 priority ecosystems. If your startup sits in travel, advanced manufacturing, logistics, or clean energy, the Saudi corridor PIF is building is worth understanding early.
