Pentathlon Ventures is a Pune-based early-stage venture fund that calls itself a VC "created by entrepreneurs to support fellow entrepreneurs". Founded in 2020 by seven marquee entrepreneurs and industry veterans — Gireendra Kasmalkar, Sandeep Chawda, Saurabh Lahoti, Madhukar Bhatia, Ashok Mayya, Hemant Joshi and Shashank Deshpande — the founding team brings over 150 years of combined entrepreneurial and operating experience.
Thesis and stage
The fund invests exclusively in B2B SaaS, operating at the critical inflection point "between early customer traction and institutional scale" — typically the round that bridges angel funding to a full Series A. Pentathlon invests at seed and pre-Series A stages, prefers to lead or co-lead rounds, and writes cheques of $500K to $1 million per company. It does not invest in idea-stage startups, and generally backs founders with at least $200K in ARR and validated early customers.
Sectors and fund size
Its investment themes span Enterprise Digital Transformation, E-commerce Enablement, Fintech, Vertical SaaS, Applied AI, Sustainable Tech and HealthTech, with the firm's current preference tilted toward Enterprise AI Transformation, Healthtech, Fintech, Cybersecurity and Logistics/Manufacturing. Through its first fund the firm invested in 23 startups; in September 2023 it announced Fund II with a target corpus of Rs 450 crore to back 25 B2B SaaS startups.
Notable portfolio and ecosystem work
Portfolio companies recorded by Inc42 include CyborgIntell, DeepTek, Dista, Doqfy, ElevateHQ and Fable Fintech. Beyond capital, the firm publishes its DNA of Scale content series on SaaS playbooks (pricing, growth), and partnered with the Entrepreneurship Cell at IIT Kharagpur as association partner for Empresario 2025, mentoring competition finalists.
The operator pedigree runs deep: the founders have previously built and scaled companies including Ideas to Impacts, Verisoft, Globant, Clarice, Veritas, Grassroots Business Fund, Ennovent, Sapience, Symphony, Rising Pharma and Citron Pharma — a mix of enterprise software, services and pharma operating experience that shapes how the fund diligence and supports its portfolio. This is why the fund markets its playbook content — the DNA of Scale emailer and blog — as peer advice from operators rather than theory from financiers.
Why it matters for founders
Pentathlon is purpose-built for B2B SaaS founders who have crossed the idea stage and can show real customer revenue — ideally $200K+ ARR. Because the partners are operators who have built and exited companies themselves, they judge product-market-fit signals like founders, not tourists. If you are a Pune or India-based SaaS startup raising your seed-to-Series-A bridge round, this is a fund that speaks your language.
