Pantera Capital is the grand old firm of crypto venture: the first US institutional asset manager focused exclusively on blockchain, investing in the space since 2013. Founder and Managing Partner Dan Morehead — formerly head of macro trading and CFO at Tiger Management and a Goldman Sachs veteran — launched the firm in 2003 as a global macro hedge fund before pivoting it to blockchain a decade later. It is headquartered in Menlo Park, California.

Pantera's approach is described on its own site through three investment types. Venture Equity takes equity stakes in companies building across the blockchain ecosystem — the firm says it leads about half of these deals. Early-Stage Tokens buys tokens (not equity) in the private stage at a discount to listing price. Liquid Tokens trades the largest, most liquid digital assets to exploit market inefficiencies. Its sector filters are Infrastructure, Finance, Enterprise, DeFi and Consumer, spanning seed and Series A equity rounds through pre-listing tokens and public digital assets.

The firm's fund history is a timeline of crypto itself. The Pantera Bitcoin Fund (2013) was the first institutional Bitcoin fund in the US — an S&P Dow Jones Indices press release notes it has returned 114,841% in twelve years. It was followed by Pantera Venture Fund II ($25M), Pantera Venture Fund III ($175M), and the Pantera Blockchain Fund, which closed at $1.3 billion in 2022 — more than double its $600M target — backing Web3 startups, early-stage tokens and liquid tokens. The firm also reported plans for a $200M Select Fund aimed at more mature, revenue-generating companies. On digital asset treasury companies, Pantera has invested $300M+ across two DAT-focused funds with more than $100M raised combined. Total assets stand at $3.5 billion as of 31 March 2026 (estimated, unaudited, per the firm's own site).

Verifiable portfolio names include Circle, Alchemy, Arbitrum, Ondo, Wintermute, M^0 and TON (named in managing partner Paul Veradittakit's bio), plus earlier-era bets such as Bakkt, Bitstamp, Ripple, BitGo, Xapo and ShapeShift. DAT positions include BitMine Immersion, Twenty One Capital and DeFi Development Corp. The site reports 100+ venture investments and 110 early-stage token deals, with 47% of invested capital outside the US. Named leaders include Paul Veradittakit (Managing Partner), Cosmo Jiang and Franklin Bi (General Partners), and Scott Lawin (President).

Pantera runs no accelerator or founder programme — it is a pure investment firm. Portfolio support comes through a dedicated Head of Portfolio Talent and Head of Marketing who help founders on go-to-market, branding, PR and hiring.

Why it matters for founders

Pantera is the firm to approach once you have a serious blockchain product with traction: its three-pronged structure means it can write equity cheques, buy your tokens pre-listing, and hold you in its liquid book as you grow. The $1.3B Blockchain Fund and the Select Fund's interest in mature, revenue-generating companies make it a strong fit for founders building infrastructure, DeFi or payments — just know that entry is through the investment team, not a public accelerator.
