Pale Blue Dot is a climate-only venture capital firm headquartered in Malmö, Sweden. Founded in 2020 by three former entrepreneurs — Hampus Jakobsson, Heidi Lindvall and Joel Larsson, who serve as the firm's general partners — it invests in founders whose companies reduce and reverse the climate crisis or help society prepare for a new world.
Investment thesis. The firm's mandate is narrow and explicit: it backs climate tech startups in Europe and the United States that have a direct or indirect positive climate impact. Climate impact is expected to be embedded in the core business model, not bolted on as a sustainability feature. The founding logic, stated on the firm's own site, is that channelling capital into founders solving climate change is simply good business — technology can still outpace the crisis, but the window to cut emissions is measured in years, not decades.
Sectors and stages. Pale Blue Dot invests strictly at pre-seed and seed stage, leading or co-leading rounds. It aims for around 10% ownership in each company and reserves roughly half the fund for follow-on investments. Sector coverage is broad within climate: energy (Podero, Solarock, Distill), e-mobility (Monta, Pelikan Mobility, Pollen, Juice, PIONIX), food tech and agritech (Bettaf!sh, Phytoform, Improvin', AgroLeague), data and AI (Climate X, Amini, Persimmons), green finance (Green-Got, Tangible, Arctal, Sphere), logistics and transport (HIVED, Ember), nature tech and carbon markets (Nala, Pivotal, Opna, Patch), raw materials (Paebbl), circular economy (CBAMBOO, Cinqo) and waste and decarbonisation (VARM).
Fund size. Its debut Climate Tech Fund closed on €87m in 2021, after a first close of €53m in June 2020. Reported limited partners included the Swedish government-backed investor SamInvest, the H&M family office Ramsbury Invest, Atomico, and founders of companies including Contentful, Zendesk, Supercell, Wise and Delivery Hero. A 2025 industry roundup put assets under management above €180m across two funds; beyond that the current fund size is not publicly disclosed.
Notable portfolio companies. The portfolio spans roughly sixty companies across Europe and the US. Standout names include Monta, the Copenhagen-based EV-charging platform; Ember, an intercity electric transport operator in Edinburgh; Climate X, a London-based climate-risk data platform; Overstory, an Amsterdam startup using satellite data to track vegetation and land; Patch, a San Francisco carbon-removal API; Paebbl, turning CO2 into raw materials in Stockholm; Green-Got, a Paris green financial services company; Phytoform, a crop-genetics company in London and Boston; and HIVED, an all-electric parcel logistics company in London.
Programs, credits and perks. Pale Blue Dot does not publicly advertise any founder programmes, cloud credits or perk bundles. For startups seeking non-dilutive support or platform perks alongside the cheque, the terms are not publicly disclosed — founders would need to ask the partners directly.
Why it matters for founders
If you are building a climate tech company in Europe or the US and raising a pre-seed or seed round, Pale Blue Dot is one of the most founder-sympathetic options on the continent: three ex-entrepreneur partners, a lead-investor stance, and a portfolio that shows genuine range from hardware to fintech. Just make sure climate impact sits at the heart of your business model — that is the bar they underwrite against.
