Oikocredit (oikocredit.coop) — the Ecumenical Development Cooperative Society U.A. — is a social impact investor and worldwide cooperative headquartered in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Founded in 1975 (the idea was born at a 1968 World Council of Churches meeting), it makes loans, equity investments and capacity-building grants to organisations in financial inclusion, agriculture and renewable energy serving low-income people across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America.
Scale
Oikocredit is funded by a community of 47,000+ investors, with member and investor capital of EUR 980 million as of June 2024 and total outstanding development financing of EUR 1,099 million. It works through 500+ partners in 52 countries; those partners reach 53 million people — 87% women, 65% rural (Impact Report 2024) — and its renewable-energy portfolio offsets 422,564 tonnes of CO₂ annually. Capacity building runs through the Oikocredit International Support Foundation. Mirjam 't Lam is Managing Director.
The India connection — since 1978
Oikocredit's India story is nearly as old as the cooperative itself: its first India project was a June 1978 loan of USD 200,000 to the Vellore Christian Medical College Board in Tamil Nadu, helping 200 low-income hospital workers obtain home loans of $1,000 each. Nearly five decades on, the bond endures — the cooperative's 50th-anniversary Global Reflection Day on 4 November 2025 was held across four locations including Hyderabad, India. A named India partner is Share Microfin Ltd (SML), and Oikocredit has signed a $100 million impact-investment agreement with Opportunity International to advance education in low-income countries.
Oikocredit's cooperative structure is the point: 47,000+ individual and institutional investors pool EUR 980 million in member capital (June 2024), which the cooperative deploys as EUR 1,099 million in outstanding development financing through 500+ partners in 52 countries. Those partners reach 53 million people — 87% women, 65% rural — and the renewable-energy book offsets 422,564 tonnes of CO₂ a year. Capacity building flows through the Oikocredit International Support Foundation, and water-and-sanitation partnerships with Aqua for All and Water.org extend the model beyond credit.
The 1978 Vellore loan — USD 200,000 to the Christian Medical College Board for $1,000 home loans to 200 low-income hospital workers — set a template the cooperative still follows: small, precise, human-scale finance. That the 50th-anniversary Global Reflection Day was marked in Hyderabad alongside three other world cities says everything about where Oikocredit believes its future lies.
Why it matters for founders
Oikocredit is patient, cooperative capital for ventures serving low-income India — microfinance institutions, agri-value-chain businesses and distributed renewable energy. With a 47-year India relationship and a 47,000-strong investor community behind it, it offers something rare: capital that measures itself in decades, not fund cycles.
