The firm
Obvious Ventures is a San Francisco-based venture capital firm founded in 2014 on a simple belief, stated on its own website: that the most valuable companies of our time will be the ones solving humanity's biggest problems. Its purpose is to back "world positive" entrepreneurs reimagining huge sectors of the global economy. The founding team brought together serial entrepreneur Ev Williams, co-founder of Blogger and Twitter, with James Joaquin and Vishal Vasishth, both entrepreneurs-turned-investors. In January 2026, the firm was reported to have raised $360 million for its fifth core fund.
Thesis and sweet spot
The firm's investment framework has always paired profit with purpose — what the firm calls a virtuous circle, where profits further a company's purpose and margins drive its mission. Today Obvious organises its investing around three themes: Human Health (healthcare, biopharma and consumer wellness), Planetary Health (clean energy, electric mobility and carbon reduction), and Economic Health (helping individuals and small businesses build financial prosperity). The original version of the thesis, described at launch, covered sustainable systems, people power and healthy living — the same three beats in different words. The firm invests early, typically writing first institutional cheques and historically planning investments in the $1 million to $5 million range, leading rounds into companies that fit its world-positive profile, with reserves for follow-ons. Its office sits two blocks from The Embarcadero in San Francisco.
Notable portfolio
Obvious's portfolio, as listed on its own site, shows the thesis in practice. Early headline bets include Beyond Meat, the plant-based protein pioneer, Gusto, the payroll and HR platform for small businesses, and Diamond Foundry, which grows diamonds in a lab with scalable, sustainable manufacturing. Health is heavily represented: Virta Health, Devoted Health, Incredible Health, Recursion (AI-driven drug discovery), Iterative Health, Ataraxis AI, Dyno Therapeutics and Inceptive. On planetary health sit Planet (high-frequency satellite imaging), Forum Mobility (electrifying drayage trucking), Lightship (all-electric recreational vehicles), Pyka (electric autonomous aircraft), Zanskar (AI-driven geothermal discovery), Arbor and Inductive Bio. People-power and economic-health names include Dexterity (AI warehouse robotics), Corvus (cyber insurance), Openly, Synop, Beam, MycoMedica, Brightside Health and Parallel Learning.
People
Day-to-day leadership sits with co-founders James Joaquin and Vishal Vasishth, both Managing Directors who handle most of the operations and board work. Ev Williams remains a co-founder who helps make investment decisions. The partnership has since been joined by Andrew Beebe as Managing Director, and partners Kahini Shah, Rohan Ganesh and Mo Islam. Early on, the firm also brought in Sami Inkinen, the co-founder and former COO of Trulia, to lead investing in healthy living.
Programs, credits and perks
Obvious Ventures does not run a public accelerator or an open credits and perks programme that founders can apply to on its website. Its model is direct venture investing paired with hands-on operating help: the firm draws on its partners' own founder and operator backgrounds — Patagonia, Apple, Xoom, Twitter, Medium — to support purpose-led teams on vision and execution. For founders, the engagement route is a pitch that shows both venture-scale economics and a credible world-positive impact story.
Why it matters for founders
If your startup attacks a trillion-dollar problem — in health, climate or economic empowerment — Obvious Ventures is one of the few firms where "doing good" is not a side note but the core filter. Come with a thesis on scale, not just mission: the firm is looking for purpose-driven founders it believes can outperform, not social-impact projects that cannot compound.
