Norwest Venture Partners (NVP) is a global venture capital and growth equity firm founded in 1961, headquartered in Menlo Park, California, and historically backed by US financial giant Wells Fargo, per The Economic Times. In India it has been investing for roughly two decades — "we have been present in India for two decades," managing director Niren Shah told ET in 2024 — with teams in Mumbai and Bengaluru. It is a multi-stage investor backing companies from first cheque to late-stage growth across North America, India and Israel.

Investment thesis

Norwest's pitch is "we do more than invest — we help you build": beyond capital it brings hands-on support in talent, brand, leadership, operations and M&A through operating executives and principals, per its own site, nvp.com. In India the firm has leaned into its long-horizon advantage — backing Swiggy from its Series B days when it was the fourth player in a crowded food-delivery market, and favouring business models with sound unit economics and profitability alongside growth, per VCSheet and ET.

Sectors and stages

Globally Norwest invests early-to-late-stage across enterprise, consumer and healthcare. In India its focus spans SaaS and enterprise software, fintech, insurance, consumer-tech, B2B tech, industrial and manufacturing companies, business and IT services, financial services, healthcare and logistics, per YourStory. ET notes the firm had 26 active India investments in 2024, of which 20 were profitable, and 8 unicorns in its portfolio.

Fund size and cheque sizes

Norwest closed its 17th global fund, NVP XVII, at $3 billion in April 2024 — following the $3 billion NVP XVI of December 2021 — taking total capital under management to $15.5 billion, per YourStory and the firm's own release. For India, Niren Shah told ET the firm deploys $250–300 million per year and writes cheques of $30–100 million per company; NVP 17's stated ranges are $10–30 million for venture and $20–100 million for growth equity, per YourStory.

Notable portfolio

India portfolio companies confirmed by public sources include Swiggy, OfBusiness, Mensa Brands, Amagi Media Labs, Xpressbees, Duroflex, Pepperfry, Five Star Finance (which IPO'd), Yatra, Regency Healthcare, Vastu Housing Finance, Veritas Finance, Finova Capital, Ummeed, Xpedeon and Quikr, per The Economic Times, VCCircle, YourStory and NVP's own press releases.

Partners and team

Niren Shah, Managing Director and Head of Norwest India, has been with the firm since 2007 and is a chartered accountant and former investment banker (ex-CFO of Baazee.com and eBay India), per ET and VCSheet. Globally the firm is led by senior managing partner Jeff Crowe.

Programs, accelerators and credits

Norwest does not run any publicly documented accelerator or fellowship for external founders; its support model is internal — portfolio services covering talent, brand, M&A and capital markets. There are no publicly documented startup credits or perks offered by the firm.

Why it matters for founders

Norwest India offers something few VCs can: global firepower with a two-decade local memory. With $250–300 million deployed in India annually and cheques from $10 million to $100 million, it can fund you from Series B through growth rounds. The catch is the bar — the firm favours companies with proven revenue traction, real unit economics and a path to profitability. If your metrics tell that story, Norwest is one of the most founder-aligned multi-stage partners in the Indian market.
