Norrsken VC is the Stockholm-based venture fund that wants to prove a point: the biggest businesses of the next generation will be built by solving the world's hardest problems. Describing itself as Europe's leading impact investor, the firm backs founders across energy, industry and healthcare who aim to fix what was once considered unsolvable, while building companies that can scale to global size.
The fund was incubated by the non-profit Norrsken Foundation and has operated as an independent venture capital fund since 2017. What sets it apart structurally is its discipline: it is an Article 9 "dark green" fund under the EU's Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, meaning 100% of its investments carry a clear environmental or social impact objective. Its financial incentive structure is wired the same way — the team's carried interest is tied to impact goals set with each portfolio company.
On size, Norrsken VC is a serious player. Its second fund closed at €320 million in May 2024, oversubscribed against a €250 million target, making it the largest early-stage generalist impact fund in Europe. It is backed by institutional investors including the European Investment Fund, Folksam and AP1. Across its funds the firm manages approximately $450 million in assets, and says it aims to deploy Fund II into 30–35 startups.
The fund is an impact generalist. It invests at pre-seed to early stages across the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, spanning climate and energy hardware, deeptech, AI, biotech, healthtech, biodiversity and education. To date it has backed more than 50 startups, including unicorns Northvolt, Einride and 1KOMMA5°, alongside names like Heart Aerospace and Submer. More recent bets include leading a $10 million round for Alcemy, an AI platform decarbonising cement production, and participating in the $100 million Series A of Syre, the textile-recycling company initiated by Vargas and H&M Group.
For India, the verified bet is LanguifyAI, an India-based B2B SaaS edtech startup founded by Lokap Sahu and Mohak Sahu, whose AI platform helps educators and edtech companies deliver personalised feedback at scale. LanguifyAI was selected for the Norrsken Accelerator 2023 batch — chosen from over 2,500 applications across 112 countries — and subsequently secured its initial seed tranche from Norrsken VC, an undisclosed amount, announced in August 2023. The company was seeking a second tranche of $700,000, with 30% committed at the time, and counts Titan Capital, Smile Group, CIIE and Alsiasar Impact among its earlier backers.
The firm is led by four founding general partners: Agate Freimane (ex-Morgan Stanley, first employee at BrickVest), Tove Larsson, David Frykman and Niklas Adalberth, the Klarna co-founder who founded the Norrsken Foundation in 2016. Its 15-strong Stockholm team sits at the centre of a wider ecosystem: the Norrsken Accelerator, an 8-week sprint at Norrsken House in Stockholm that picks 20 early-stage impact startups a year and invests $125,000 in each, and Norrsken House hubs including Kigali, Rwanda. In 2025 the Foundation pledged €300 million for AI-focused impact startups, to be deployed through Norrsken VC, Launcher and the Accelerator.
Why it matters for founders
Norrsken VC is one of the few global funds where impact is a hard requirement, not a label — every investment must carry an impact objective, and the partners' own pay is tied to hitting it. The LanguifyAI path shows the door is open: India's edtech, climate and AI startups can reach Stockholm through the Accelerator's annual intake, where 20 startups from thousands of applicants get investment and an 8-week sprint.
