Mubadala Investment Company is Abu Dhabi's commercially driven sovereign investor, managing US$385 billion across more than 80 countries. It pairs nation-building at home with aggressive global dealmaking — including one of the landmark cheques in Indian startup history: ₹9,093.60 crore into Jio Platforms.

Investment thesis

Wholly owned by the Government of Abu Dhabi, Mubadala invests to generate sustainable financial returns while building sector champions — in the UAE and worldwide. Its 2025 results, announced in April 2026, showed why it is taken seriously: assets up 17% to AED 1.414 trillion (US$385 billion), five-year annualised returns of 10.7% and ten-year returns of 10.3%, with record deployment of AED 143 billion (US$39 billion) — up 20% — and proceeds of AED 138 billion (US$38 billion), up 27%.

Sectors & stages

Mubadala invests across asset classes and stages — from early-stage venture to multi-billion-dollar direct stakes — with artificial intelligence and technology among its stated priorities for 2025, alongside the UAE's broader economic diversification agenda.

Fund & cheque sizes

With US$385 billion under management, Mubadala writes some of the largest cheques in venture and growth: ₹9,093.60 crore (US$1.2 billion) for a 1.85% stake in Jio Platforms in June 2020, at an equity value of ₹4.91 lakh crore and an enterprise value of ₹5.16 lakh crore.

Notable portfolio

Recent deal flow on its own site includes the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm alongside Apollo Funds, a US$575 million round in WHOOP at a US$10.1 billion valuation, and the sale of a minority stake in CoolIT to Ecolab in a KKR-led US$4.75 billion transaction. In India, Jio Platforms anchors the portfolio.

Partners & team

Mubadala is led by managing director and group chief executive Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak and chief financial officer Carlos Obeid.

Programs run

Mubadala invests directly through its sector teams and via dedicated asset-management and ventures arms, alongside sovereign partnerships.

How to approach

Early-stage founders should target its ventures arm; growth and late-stage companies engage the direct-investment teams, usually via investment banks or co-investors. A credible path to regional or global scale — and ideally a UAE or Gulf angle — strengthens the pitch.

Why it matters for founders

Mubadala is that rare sovereign that plays at every stage: billion-dollar direct cheques into Jio and Reliance Retail, plus early-stage bets through Mubadala Ventures. With US$385 billion, record deployment and an explicit AI and tech push, it is one of the most founder-relevant Gulf investors operating in India today.
