Motilal Oswal Alternates is the alternatives arm of the Motilal Oswal Group, one of India's most respected equity investment houses. Established in 2006, the private equity business has grown into a full-scale alternatives platform managing Rs 30,000 crore across private equity, real estate and private credit, with the PE vertical alone managing Rs 18,000 crore across five funds.

The headline event is the firm's fifth private equity fund. The India Business Excellence Fund V (IBEF V) reached a final close of Rs 8,500 crore at its hard cap in February 2026 — the largest fund in the firm's private equity history, raised in under ten months from its April 2025 launch against an initial target of Rs 6,500 crore. Its limited partners include global institutions such as Adams Street Partners, Schroders, Neuberger Berman, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Oman Investment Authority and Axiom Asia, alongside leading Japanese institutions, domestic banks and insurers, and family offices. The sponsor group and the Alternates team committed over 10 per cent of the corpus themselves.

The firm's PE strategy is unapologetically mid-market: growth capital for Indian companies with strong market positions, with Fund V writing cheques of roughly $40–100 million in mid-to-late-stage businesses. Its preferred sectors are consumer, financial services, life sciences and niche manufacturing.

The portfolio reads like a roll-call of India's mid-market champions: AU Small Finance Bank — whose CEO Sanjay Agarwal credits the firm with helping grow it from a small company into a $1 billion institution — Dixon Technologies, Kurlon, Molbio Diagnostics, IKF Finance, VVDN Technologies, N. Ranga Rao & Sons, Minda Industries and GR Infra. In total the PE platform has made 51 investments and completed 24 exits, generating approximately $1 billion in liquidity.

Beyond private equity, the platform runs two more engines. The real estate vertical — the India Realty Excellence Fund (IREF) series — has undertaken more than 150 investments and funded around Rs 7,500 crore across 50 developers, with IREF VI targeting Rs 2,000 crore for mid-income and affordable residential projects across India's top eight cities. The firm has also launched its maiden private credit fund, completing the full alternatives stack.

Leadership reflects the sector depth. The private equity platform is co-headed by Rohit Mantri (MD, Healthcare) and Vijay Dhanuka (MD, Consumer), with Prakash Bagla (MD, Niche Manufacturing) and Vinit Mehta (MD, Financial Services) leading their verticals — a senior team of seven managing directors and eleven directors across PE, real estate and private credit.

For founders, Motilal Oswal Alternates is the growth partner for companies that are already category leaders or contenders — typically profitable, first-generation-entrepreneur-led businesses ready to scale toward an IPO. If your company is past the venture stage and entering its scale phase, this is one of India's deepest-pocketed domestic partners.

Why it matters for founders

With Rs 30,000 crore in AUM, a record Rs 8,500 crore Fund V, and a portfolio of household mid-market names like AU Small Finance Bank and Dixon Technologies, Motilal Oswal Alternates is built for founders moving from venture scale to market leadership. Its sector-focused managing directors, IPO-stage experience and 24-exit track record make it one of the strongest domestic growth-capital options for mid-market companies.
