The firm

Menterra Venture Advisors is a Bengaluru-based impact investment firm whose very name — "the land of mentoring" — states its philosophy. Born out of the Villgro ecosystem and co-founded by Villgro founder Paul Basil alongside Mukesh Sharma (Co-founder and Managing Director) and partner George Thomas, Menterra exists to bridge a specific gap: the lonely stretch between seed and Series A where social enterprises die for lack of capital, technical assistance and mentoring.

Thesis and sweet spot

Menterra backs early-stage, for-profit social enterprises in education, health, agriculture and energy — ventures solving compelling problems for underserved Indians. The fund's core insight is that many founders in this space don't come from business families or have business backgrounds, so the fund steps in with guidance as well as capital, taking companies from ideation to the stage where revenue and traction show.

Ticket sizes in Fund I ran Rs 1–4 crore, aimed squarely at the seed-to-Series-A gap that angel networks and growth funds both skip over.

Fund size

Menterra Social Impact Fund I, launched in 2016, was a Rs 50 crore demonstrator fund designed to prove that meaningful impact and commercial returns can coexist. It made 12 investments and deployed 104% of its corpus including recycled capital — and has returned significant capital to investors through exits, with the managers expecting top-quartile returns from the maiden fund.

Menterra Social Impact Fund II announced a first close of Rs 227 crore (~$30 million) in April 2022, targeting a Rs 750 crore (~$100 million) corpus including a Rs 250 crore greenshoe — a 15x step-up in ambition.

Notable portfolio

Fund I's twelve bets span its thesis sectors: Biosense (point-of-care diagnostics, divested to PerkinElmer of the USA), Omix Research and Diagnostic Labs, Adiuvo Diagnostics, Ez Vidya (owners of the Chrysalis education brand), Iron Kettle (incubated by Menterra itself to improve commercial outcomes for small tea growers), Medhavi Professional Services (career counselling), Leap Skills Academy, NubeSol and Math Buddy.

Impact, measured

Menterra publishes what many funds won't: hard impact numbers. Its FY22-23 impact report shows Rs 53 crore invested across 12 companies, 57% of capital aligned to the 2X gender challenge, an inspiring 67% of investee companies with a woman founder, and reach of over 900,000 students, 1,500+ patients and 179 small farmers.

Why it matters for founders

If you are building a social enterprise in education, health, agriculture or energy and need more than a cheque — real mentoring from people who built Villgro — Menterra is the fund designed precisely for you, with a Rs 750 crore second fund to deploy.
