As reported by The Indian Express on 5 October 2026 and covered by Inc42, Business Today and Moneycontrol on 6–7 October, the Maharashtra government has set a July 2027 deadline for bike-taxi aggregators — Ola, Uber and Rapido — to move to 100% electric fleets. A caveat applies: the official Transport Department order has not been publicly verified, and one outlet withdrew its version of the story.

As reported, the shift comes through a nine-month phased transition: six months for operators currently running petrol bike taxis, plus three months for those on provisional or temporary licences under the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Rules, 2025.

The industry is pushing back. The Maharashtra Bike Taxi Welfare Association has reportedly asked for 18 months instead, while aggregators have sought an extension to 2030, citing the state EV policy. A proposed 50:50 petrol-EV mix was reportedly rejected.

If it holds, the mandate would make Maharashtra one of the most aggressive states on two-wheeler electrification — and a major demand signal for EV fleet providers and battery-swapping networks.

Why it matters for founders

Policy mandates create overnight markets. EV startups in fleet sales, charging infra and battery swapping should track this mandate closely — a July 2027 deadline means procurement cycles start now.
