Investment thesis

MaC Venture Capital is a seed-stage venture capital firm based in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley that invests through a cultural investment framework — using business and consumer trend research to identify technology startups leveraging shifts in culture and behaviour. The firm was formed in 2019 from the merger of Cross Culture Ventures, co-founded by Marlon Nichols, and M Ventures, co-founded by former Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, Michael Palank and MACRO founder Charles D. King. It is a majority Black-owned firm.

Sectors and stages

MaC invests at pre-seed and seed across a wide range of sectors, including fintech, e-commerce and marketplaces, interactive media, connectivity, enterprise SaaS, space and aerospace and logistics. It describes its focus as technology, business, government, entertainment and finance, and it is geographically agnostic — portfolio companies span from Seattle to Houston to Bentonville to Nairobi.

Fund size

MaC announced its inaugural seed-stage fund of $103 million in March 2021, then nearly doubled it with a $203 million Fund II in June 2022, taking assets under management to $412 million, according to Business Wire. The firm had invested in 50 companies at the time of the Fund II announcement, with roughly $99 million deployed across its portfolio, and 30% of its Fund I companies had raised successful Series A rounds. Limited partners include Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, the University of Michigan, Foot Locker and the MacArthur Foundation.

Notable portfolio companies

Top performers named at the Fund II launch include Pipe, Edge Delta, Stoke, Zigazoo, Epsilon3 and Spartan Radar, alongside Goodfair, Finesse, PureStream and Sote. Founder testimonials on the firm's own site also feature Xona, Shekel Mobility, Purestream, NUVIEW, Wonder Dynamics and Aeon.

Key partners

The four founding general partners are Marlon Nichols and Adrian Fenty (managing general partners), Michael Palank and Charles D. King. Partner Danny Brown was instrumental from inception, and the team later added partners Haley Farnsworth and Zhenni Liu. Diversity runs through the firm itself: 36% of portfolio companies are women-led and 69% have BIPOC founders, with over half of the investment team Black and a quarter women.

Programmes

MaC does not run an accelerator or a public cloud-credits programme. Its value-add is hands-on: operations strategy, brand building, recruiting, sales development and mission-critical introductions through the partners' cross-industry networks in technology, media, entertainment, government and finance.

Why it matters for founders

MaC is a strong fit for early-stage founders whose product rides a genuine cultural shift — not just a tech trend. It looks for ambitious teams with early traction (a minimum viable product) aiming at billion-dollar categories, and it is explicit that it evaluates ideas on merit, not resumes. If your market is shaped by consumer behaviour, pitch them before you are obvious.
