Few climate investors say the quiet part out loud the way Lowercarbon Capital does. Founded by Chris Sacca, the firm backs companies that make real money by slashing CO₂ emissions, removing carbon from the atmosphere, and buying the world time against climate change. Its premise: fixing the planet is just good business — markets, not shame and guilt, will drive the transition.

Lowercarbon invests across energy, transportation, industrial materials, and agriculture, primarily at the earliest stages — pre-seed, seed, and Series A/B — with follow-on and growth investments for its winners. It is an explicitly returns-driven climate fund, not a philanthropy vehicle, and that framing shapes how it evaluates every deal.

The fund's growth has been rapid and is publicly documented. It announced $800 million in its first outside capital in August 2021, split across four funds. That was followed by a $350 million carbon-removal fund in April 2022, a $250 million fusion-energy fund dubbed "Lowercarbon Q>1" in 2022, and a $550 million pair of funds (one early-stage, one follow-on) in September 2023 — bringing assets under management to roughly $2 billion at the time.

The portfolio spans the full stack of decarbonisation, presented on the firm's homepage under the heading "Exhibit A" with the site's own descriptors. Standouts named on the firm's own homepage include Sublime (zero-carbon cement), Crusoe (methane-slashing compute clusters), Mosa (100% beef without raising cattle), Heart (fully-electric passenger planes), Commonwealth Fusion Systems (fusion magnets), Lilac (clean, fast, cheap lithium mining), Solugen (chemicals made with enzymes, not oil), and Antora (batteries that make solar work around the clock).

The team centres on the founder: Chris Sacca is founder and managing partner, Crystal English Sacca is co-founder, Clay Dumas is a founding partner and reportedly the firm's most active investor, and Shawn Xu is a partner.

Lowercarbon does not run a formal accelerator or fellowship programme. Its site features Climate Scoops, a content and news section, and a founder outreach call-to-action (Get Off the Couch) — but no structured founder programme or publicly stated credit/perks scheme could be verified.

Why it matters for founders

If your climate start-up has a credible path to real revenue — not just impact metrics — Lowercarbon is built for you. The firm's thesis rewards founders who treat emissions reduction as a business model, and its willingness to lead early rounds in fusion, cement, and aviation shows it will take technical risk where the economics pencil out. Come with unit economics, not just a mission.
