LeapFrog Investments calls itself a 'profit with purpose' investment firm — and it has the receipts. Founded in 2007 in South Africa and launched in 2008 alongside former US President Bill Clinton, it invests in exceptional businesses across Africa and Asia, partnering with their leaders to deliver leaps of growth, profitability and social impact. Fortune named it one of the top five Companies to Change the World in both 2017 and 2023 — the first private investment firm ever listed.
The firm concentrates on three sectors: financial services (fintech and insurtech), healthcare, and climate solutions. It writes growth-equity cheques, does buyouts and management buyouts, and takes both majority and minority stakes — so it can flex from a significant minority position to full ownership depending on the opportunity.
Scale is serious: more than US$2.8 billion raised from investors (as of 2025). Its own numbers tell the impact story — portfolio companies reach 622 million people and generate US$9 billion in revenue and US$1.5 billion in profit. This is impact investing that refuses to treat returns and reach as a trade-off.
Indian founders will recognise names in the portfolio: Electronica Finance, Redcliffe Labs and HealthifyMe, alongside global bets like bolttech, Sun King, WorldRemit (now Zepz) and HDBank. The firm is led by Founder & CEO Andrew Kuper with Dominic Barton as Chairman.
What sets LeapFrog apart structurally is its impact machinery: FIIRM, its proprietary impact measurement and management framework; a Climate Investment Strategy launched at COP27 in 2022 backing companies enabling climate mitigation for lower-income people; and a pioneering role in creating the Operating Principles for Impact Management with the IFC and World Bank in 2018 — it was the first impact investor globally to publish an independent audit of its impact against those principles.
The firm's leadership bench explains its convening power. Founder and CEO Andrew Kuper is joined by Chairman Dominic Barton, while a Global Leadership Council has added heavyweights like Roger Ferguson — the former TIAA CEO and US Federal Reserve vice-chair — alongside impact head Julie Wallace. On credibility infrastructure, LeapFrog was the first impact investor globally to publish an independent audit of its impact against the Operating Principles for Impact Management, earning an Advanced rating from BlueMark. For founders, that audit culture cuts both ways: expect rigorous impact measurement alongside financial diligence, but also a portfolio stamp that makes development-finance co-investors take your next round seriously.
Why it matters for founders
LeapFrog is the firm to know if you're building a fintech, insurtech, healthtech or climate business with genuine low-income reach at growth stage. It brings not just capital but a global impact-measurement discipline that makes follow-on fundraising easier. Come with unit economics that already work — 'purpose' here never subsidises broken economics.
