Global private equity giant KKR is set to invest more than ₹6,000 crore in Gentari Renewable India Pte Ltd, the Indian renewable-energy arm of Malaysia's Petronas, The Economic Times reported on October 19, 2026 — in a deal that underlines the surge of global capital into India's clean-energy startups and ventures.

The investment, reported at RM2.6 billion (~US$554 million) by The Edge Malaysia citing ET, will not directly give KKR equity — instead, KKR will hold an option to acquire a stake later. KKR's vehicle Sapphire US Holdco LLC has already sought approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the investment.

Where the money goes

Gentari Renewable India has been raising growth capital to expand its renewable and green-hydrogen projects and lower debt. The funding will also be used to acquire stakes Gentari holds in some of its Indian joint ventures — including a ReNew joint venture for solar, wind and hybrid generation, and a partnership with AM Green for hydrogen and ammonia production.

Gentari bought a 1.6-gigawatt solar-and-wind portfolio from Brookfield in March 2025 for US$900 million, and Standard Chartered has advised it on inducting a financial partner.

KKR's India infra playbook

KKR's India infrastructure portfolio is worth an estimated $10 billion, with existing renewable bets on Hero Future Energy and Serentica Renewables plus its Indigrid sponsorship. It lost the Sprng Energy race to Aditya Birla's $1.8 billion bid earlier this year — and is now doubling down through Gentari.

Why it matters for founders

Global PE is hunting Indian clean-energy platforms with serious scale — Gentari's playbook is acquire, consolidate, then bring in a financial partner. If your venture aggregates real megawatts, the capital lane is wide open.
