Jump Crypto is the crypto division of the Jump Trading Group, the Chicago-headquartered proprietary trading firm founded in 1999. Formally launched as a distinct brand in September 2021, it describes itself as builders of blockchain technology "revolutionizing open, community-driven networks," and operates across three pillars: Trade, Build and Invest.

Thesis: trade, build, invest

Jump Crypto's edge is that it is not only a capital allocator. The Trade arm runs market-making and liquidity provision across major centralised exchanges and decentralised protocols; the Build arm produces open-source blockchain infrastructure; and Invest brings "the capital and resources to help projects scale." It operates as a proprietary business off Jump Trading's own balance sheet — it does not raise external funds, so no fund size is publicly disclosed.

Flagship engineering: Firedancer

The signature Build project is Firedancer, a ground-up rewrite of the Solana validator client in the C programming language, designed to scale Solana's throughput. The firm also publishes research on market structure, decentralised storage and cryptographic migration paths. Its official site lists Solana, Phantom, Backpack, Bitso, CoinDCX, Figure, zerohash, Consensys and Certora among the networks and companies it works with.

Portfolio highlights

Jump Crypto backed the cross-chain messaging protocol Wormhole — stepping in to replenish roughly $320 million after the February 2022 exploit — and is associated with the Pyth oracle network, also Solana-centred. In September 2025 it co-led, with Galaxy Digital and Multicoin Capital, a reported $1.65 billion private placement for Forward Industries to build a Solana-focused digital asset treasury. The firm says it contributes "time, capital, and code" to convert systemic bottlenecks in crypto infrastructure into shared breakthroughs.

People and context

Kanav Kariya served as president of Jump Crypto until stepping down in June 2024. Founders should be aware of the regulatory backdrop: the firm reached a $123 million settlement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in December 2024 over claims related to statements about the TerraUSD stablecoin during the 2022 Terra collapse, and it lost roughly $300 million on the FTX exchange collapse.

Why it matters for founders

Jump Crypto is the rare investor that can write a cheque, make your token's market, and ship core infrastructure your protocol depends on. For crypto-native founders building at the infrastructure or DeFi layer — especially on Solana — its engineering depth and trading franchise are genuine differentiators. Just go in with eyes open: its balance-sheet bets have swung hard in past cycles.
