Electric vehicle charging and energy management platform Ionage has raised $1.3 million in a pre-Series A round from strategic investors and a consortium of senior executives from global energy and infrastructure companies.
Founded by Vimal Kumar V, Ionage provides a software and interoperability layer connecting charging operators, OEMs, property owners and EV drivers. The startup will use the funds to expand coverage across India's active EV charging networks, improve charger discovery and payment services, and help small and medium-sized charge point operators establish and manage charging stations.
Ionage already supports more than 25,000 four-wheeler charging points, 63 fleets and 75 charging partners across 33 states and Union Territories, covering nearly 3,000 cities — and claims its platform runs on over 70% of India's charging hardware. Its suite includes the Nexus platform for network management, a consumer app and a marketplace called Flo.
The funding lands as India's charging ecosystem strains: Ionage estimates nearly two in five public chargers are non-functional at any given time, with a ratio of one charger for every 235 EVs in 2025. "We're building the layer that fixes that: the operating system every charger can run on, whoever owns it," said Kumar.
Why it matters for founders
In fragmented infrastructure markets, the winner is often the software layer, not the asset owner. Ionage turned 70% hardware coverage into a fundraising story about reliability — a lesson for EV, logistics and energy founders: sell uptime, not hardware.
