Wireframe Ventures is an early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2016 by Harsh Patel and Paul Straub, based in the San Francisco Bay Area with a presence in New York City. Its identity is summed up in three words: "people-product-purpose" — the firm only backs founders whose mission to improve the health of people and the planet is inseparable from their commercial product. Wireframe Ventures funding is deliberately thematic: the firm likes to be the first check in pre-seed and seed rounds, working closely with technical founders from inception. It later raised a $77M pre-seed and seed fund, Fund II.

Thesis & focus

Climate change is the biggest risk to human health on a global scale — that is the core belief behind Wireframe's thesis. The firm was started in 2016 on the conviction that climate and human health were deeply intertwined themes with profound societal impact and the potential to re-imagine the global economy. Wireframe set out taking early technical risk in deeptech, biotech and energy before those categories became mainstream.

Sectors & stages

Wireframe invests at the pre-seed and seed stage, with typical first cheques of $200K–1.5M across the US, Canada and Europe. It is technology-agnostic but thematically focused: electrification of transportation, agriculture, sustainable consumer goods, the circular economy, renewables, manufacturing, energy, computational biology and synthetic biology. For pre-seed investments the process usually takes one to three weeks, weighing the founders as much as the idea. The firm reserves 10% of each fund for investments outside its typical criteria, usually in teams it has backed before.

Fund size & cheque size

Wireframe Ventures II is a $77M pre-seed and seed fund for climate and health, announced alongside the firm's expansion from the Bay Area to New York City. The first fund made 25 seed and pre-seed investments, producing two unicorns and two significant exits; its companies raised more than $1.2B in follow-on capital from investors including Insight, Lux, Mayfield, Venrock and Wellington.

Wireframe Ventures: notable portfolio / investments

It led SPAN's seed round; SPAN has since raised over $120M. Its seed investment in Mammoth Biosciences backed Trevor Martin, Janice Chen, Lucas Harrington and Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna; Mammoth is now a unicorn biotech. It led Electriphi's seed round — the company is now the cornerstone of Ford Pro Charging — and led Enveda Biosciences' pre-seed round for Viswa Colluru. Its seed investment in OpenInvest is now part of JP Morgan. Others include Trove, Astronomer, Near Space Labs, Misty Robotics, Endpoint Health, Phytoform Labs and Synop AI.

Partners & team

Led by co-founders Harsh Patel and Paul Straub. Patel, the managing partner, is a former founder and CTO with 20+ years as an entrepreneur and investor in climate, human health and deeptech. Straub has 15+ years investing in renewables, energy and climate through the first cleantech wave. Lily Bernicker joined as a Principal with the second fund.

How to apply for funding

Wireframe is unusually founder-accessible. It advises founders to reach out early — pre-seed decisions weigh the individuals as much as the idea. There is no accelerator or credits programme; founders pitch the partners directly via wireframevc.com or through portfolio-founder introductions. The firm likes to be the first institutional check and stays hands-on from inception.

Why it matters for founders

If you are building deeptech or biotech at the intersection of climate and human health, Wireframe is the archetypal first check — patient, technical, and willing to invest pre-revenue when most funds won't. Bring a mission, not just a market.
