Investment thesis
Volvo Cars Tech Fund is the corporate venture capital arm of Volvo Cars, the Swedish premium carmaker headquartered in Gothenburg. Founded in 2018, the fund builds and nurtures a portfolio of high-potential mobility startups that can scale into Volvo Cars' closest technology partners. Its stated purpose is strategic rather than purely financial: to give Volvo Cars early access to new technologies, capabilities and talent transforming the industry.
A consistent theme is vertical integration: gaining control over the electrification technology stack, from e-motors and inverters to batteries and power electronics, so future electric Volvos deliver longer range and faster charging.
Sectors, stages and cheque size
The fund's core hunting grounds are artificial intelligence, electrification, autonomous driving and digital mobility services, with a strong overlay of sustainable materials and circular-economy technologies. Recent bets cluster around batteries (sodium-ion cells, fast charging, battery-management software), power electronics, robotics, supply-chain traceability and lightweight natural-fibre composites.
Volvo Cars Tech Fund publishes a typical investment size of EUR 1-5 million and typically enters at Seed, Series A and Series B. The official site currently lists 23 investments. The total fund size is not publicly disclosed.
Notable portfolio companies
Portfolio companies named on the official site include Altris (Swedish sodium-ion battery developer), StoreDot (extreme fast-charging battery technology), Breathe Battery Technologies (advanced battery-management algorithms), Leadrive Technology (silicon-carbide power modules for electric drivetrains), Niron Magnetics (iron-nitride magnets that avoid rare earths), BComp (natural-fibre lightweight composites for interiors), Circulor (blockchain-based supply-chain traceability), Neura Robotics (cognitive collaborative robots), Dcbel (bi-directional home energy stations), Eliq (home energy intelligence), Syre (textile-to-textile recycling at hyperscale), Carwow (online car marketplace used by more than 12 million people), Varjo (industrial VR/XR hardware), UVeye (AI-driven automated vehicle inspection), Zum (school transport platform), RemotiveLabs (automotive software development platform), CorrActions (software-only driver monitoring), RIIICO (digital factory layouts), Enjoyelec (energy-storage asset operations), Forciot (printed stretchable electronics) and Actasys (sensor-cleaning actuator systems).
Leadership
The fund is led today by CEO Shkolqim Fejzi. It was founded in 2018 by Zaki Fasihuddin, then Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at the Volvo Cars Silicon Valley Technology Center, with an explicit mandate to invest in companies that could provide strategic access to new technologies and talent.
Programmes and perks
Rather than running its own accelerator, Volvo Cars Tech Fund collaborates with startup innovation platforms. Portfolio startups benefit from technology validation inside a global carmaker, faster routes to product-market fit, potential access to Volvo Cars' largest market (China), and the company's global network of automotive and technology partners, alongside the credibility of association with a premium manufacturer.
Geographic focus
The fund invests globally across the US, Europe and Asia, the three continents where Volvo Cars manufactures. Its sustainable-materials bets are deliberately sited on these three continents, partly to manage cost and supply-chain risk.
How to apply for funding
There is no public application portal or published pitch process on the fund's official site. The Tech Fund sources deals through its network and innovation-platform partners, so founders realistically need a warm introduction through that ecosystem rather than a cold application.
Why it matters for founders
Volvo Cars Tech Fund is one of the most transparent automotive CVCs on cheque size (EUR 1-5M at Seed to Series B) and thesis fit. If your technology advances electrification, batteries, circular materials or in-vehicle AI, a strategic investor that can validate your product inside a global car programme is worth more than a generalist fund writing the same cheque.
