Verizon Ventures is the strategic investment arm of Verizon, the US telecom operator. Its own description is unusually clear about what it sells founders: it links entrepreneurs to the larger Verizon ecosystem, speeding development by sharing engineering knowledge, market insights and customer relationships.
Thesis: funding the future of connectivity
Verizon Ventures says its mission is to fund the future of connectivity, investing in companies whose technologies transform the way people live, work and communicate. Its deal history spans 5G and mobile edge computing, Wi-Fi sensing, network security, vehicle-to-everything systems, autonomous retail, robotics, data infrastructure and AI. The common thread is not a single vertical but a network effect: technology that becomes more valuable when it runs on, or alongside, Verizon's networks, devices and enterprise channels.
Sectors, stages and fund size
Verizon Ventures invests across early and later stages, with its 2022 review covering Series A and Series B deals as well as follow-on commercial partnerships. It does not publish a current total fund size on its official pages read here, so its fund size is not publicly disclosed. Secondary databases report cheques roughly from $1 million to $30 million; that range is reported, not confirmed by Verizon itself, and should be treated as indicative. Founders should therefore pitch the strategic fit first and confirm cheque expectations in conversation, rather than anchoring on an unverified range.
Notable portfolio
Verizon's own 2022 review gives the best-documented examples. It joined Fermata Energy's $40 million Series A; Fermata Energy builds vehicle-to-everything systems that let parked electric vehicles feed stored power back to the grid. It backed Sanctuary Cognitive Systems in a $58.5 million Series A for general-purpose robots that plug into existing factory operations. It backed AiFi in a $65 million Series B for camera-only autonomous shopping, and worked with AiFi to open an autonomous store at a Formula 1 race on Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband. Earlier, it invested in Origin Wireless as part of a $14 million round, and co-led SAM Seamless Network's $20 million Series B with BlackBerry in 2021.
Partners, programmes and perks
The perks are commercial, and Verizon documents them. Origin Wireless' Wi-Fi sensing technology was featured in Verizon's Home Awareness service on select Fios routers, detecting motion from disruptions in Wi-Fi signals for uses including fall detection and intruder alerts. SAM Seamless Network's cloud-native network security powers Verizon's Device ID service, giving Fios customers visibility into devices on their home networks. Managing director Michelle McCarthy is named in Verizon's own review in connection with the Sanctuary investment.
How to apply for funding
Verizon Ventures does not publish an open application form with a deadline on its official pages read here. Founders should approach through the Verizon Ventures pages on verizon.com, or through a warm introduction from a co-investor, a Verizon product or network contact, or a portfolio founder. The strongest pitch is specific about the network: what runs better on 5G, edge compute, Fios or Verizon's enterprise stack, what a joint commercial test would look like, and what customer evidence already exists.
Why it matters for founders
For connectivity, edge, network security, data and applied AI founders, Verizon Ventures can offer live network testbeds, product integration and enterprise reach that are hard to buy elsewhere. Approach it when a Verizon deployment would genuinely accelerate the company, and be ready to show how that deployment works in practice.
