Triodos Investment Management BV is the impact-investing subsidiary of Triodos Bank NV, wholly owned by the Dutch ethical bank. With EUR 5.4 billion in AUM as of June 2025 and every fund classified as EU SFDR Article 9 (sustainable investment as its objective), it is among Europe's largest pure-play impact investors — and it has been writing India cheques for nearly a decade.
Its Indian portfolio spans banks, fintech and affordable education. Recent activity is very much alive: in September 2025 it extended a $3 million, three-year debt facility to Kaleidofin Capital, and it committed €30 million alongside FMO and OeEB to the Hivos-Triodos Fonds the same month.
Investment thesis
"Impact investing is all we do." Triodos directs capital to innovative entrepreneurs and sustainable businesses to make money work for lasting, positive change — a fairer, more sustainable and humane world. Article 9 classification means impact is the legal objective of its funds, not a marketing overlay.
Sectors and stage
Three core sectors: Energy & Climate, Inclusive Finance and Sustainable Food & Agriculture, plus listed Impact Equities and Bonds. It invests debt and equity in established institutions and companies — microfinance institutions, small banks, fintechs and NBFCs, agri and renewable-energy businesses — rather than seed-stage venture.
Fund size and cheque size
AUM is EUR 5.4 billion (June 2025, the latest disclosed figure). Standard ticket sizes are not published; the observed India deal size is the $3 million Kaleidofin debt facility.
Notable portfolio
Indian investments include Utkarsh Bank (first invested March 2021; listed on the BSE/NSE in July 2023), AYEFin (first investment September 2017), axio (first investment April 2018), Varthana Finance (a loan financing affordable private schools serving around 2.5 million children) and Kaleidofin Capital (the $3 million 2025 debt). The Triodos Microfinance Fund country factsheet carries an India allocation.
Partners and team
Dick van Ommeren chairs the Management Board, and Senior Investment Manager Martijn Vranken led the 2025 Kaleidofin deal. Triodos IM operates as a licensed AIFM/UCITS manager under Dutch AFM and De Nederlandsche Bank supervision.
Programs and perks
The firm runs a broad fund shelf: the Triodos Microfinance Fund, Triodos Fair Share Fund, Triodos Emerging Markets Renewable Energy Fund, Hivos-Triodos Fonds, the Lombard Odier Gateway – Triodos Development Finance Fund (2025), the Triodos Global Equities Impact Fund, the Triodos Pioneer Impact Fund and the Triodos Future Generations Fund. No credits or perks programme is published.
How to apply for funding
Triodos runs a dedicated founder route: triodos-im.com/looking-for-funding/overview ("Looking for funding — Finance for sustainable growth"), where founders select the relevant strategy and sector and see the funding options available.
Why it matters for founders
Triodos is the rare European investor that combines scale (€5.4B AUM), a public funding-application page and a decade of Indian deal flow — including two listed outcomes and a 2025 Kaleidofin cheque. If your company is in inclusive finance, climate or sustainable food and can evidence real impact, its 'looking for funding' page is one of the most founder-friendly doors in impact investing.
