Tech Coast Angels, now operating as TCA Venture Group, is one of the largest and most active angel investor networks in the United States. Founded in 1997 by Luis Villalobos in Southern California, it funds seed and early-stage companies, mostly in emerging technology and life sciences, and gives founders more than capital: counsel, mentoring and access to investors, customers, strategic partners and management talent.

Thesis

The thesis is that experienced operators make better early investors than distant financiers. Every TCA Venture Group member is an accredited investor, and many are founders and business leaders who have built companies themselves. The network seeks companies with innovative solutions to meaningful problems and a clear, sustainable and differentiated advantage. It is deliberately broad in sector, because its advantage is the diversity of its members' expertise, not a single thesis about one technology.

Sectors & Stages

TCA Venture Group invests at seed, bridge and early Series A stages, across most industries, with a particular emphasis on life sciences, software, internet, biotechnology, media, business services and consumer products. It works with startups across the United States and Canada, while prioritising California-based entrepreneurs with bold, game-changing ideas.

Fund & Cheque Size

As a network rather than a single fund, TCA Venture Group does not have one fund size in the venture sense. Its members collectively invest in the range of $250,000 to $2 million as a group, according to network descriptions, and recent network reporting puts total investment at approximately $315 million in 596 companies, attracting an additional $3 billion in follow-on capital. Since 2019 it has invested between $6 million and $21 million each year, with $9 million invested in 2025.

Notable Portfolio

The network's scale is its portfolio story: more than 540 companies funded since 1997 on its own site, and 596 companies in its most recent reporting, with portfolio companies attracting more than $2.2 billion in additional capital on the site's figures. Recent reporting also highlights BMI OrganBank, recipient of the Luis Villalobos Award in Life Sciences, as an example of the network's life-sciences activity. For founders, the relevant question is not one famous exit but whether the network's members understand your sector.

Partners & Programs

TCA Venture Group has about 300 accredited investor members in five member networks, with about 400 members described on its site when including members in other cities. Its programmes include chapter funds, such as the Los Angeles chapter fund, and affiliation with the Angel Syndication Network and the Pegasus Angel Accelerator. Members provide hands-on mentoring, help building management teams, critical business connections and help raising additional venture capital.

How to apply for funding

Founders apply for funding through TCA Venture Group at tcaventuregroup.com/apply-for-funding/, the application route named in the network's Orange County deal application. Applicants should fit the network's criteria, including being a United States-based C-corporation or equivalent, and be ready for pre-screening, a screening meeting to pitch members, deeper due diligence and then individual and fund investment decisions.

Why it matters for founders

Tech Coast Angels matters because it fills the earliest funding gap with people, not just money: about $315 million invested in 596 companies since 1997, backed by operators who mentor, open doors and syndicate. If you are raising a seed round in Southern California or beyond, it is a network worth applying to early.
