Tano Capital is an Asia-focused alternative asset manager founded in 2004 by Charles E. Johnson, formerly co-president of Franklin Templeton Investments and chief executive of Templeton Worldwide. From its San Mateo, California base, it has run two dedicated India funds backing mid-market companies with operating businesses, rather than early-stage start-ups chasing hypergrowth.
Investment thesis
Tano Capital invests in early to mid-stage companies that have a prior business record and strong growth potential over four to five years. Its India funds focused on mid-market companies in manufacturing, engineering and healthcare, alongside infrastructure ancillaries, consumer discretionary and financial services. The firm has described itself as sector agnostic except for real estate and pure commodity plays. Its India advisory arm, Tano India Advisors, was led by co-founders Hetal Gandhi and Carlton Pereira.
Fund size and cheque size
Tano India Private Equity Fund I was a 2006 vintage fund of $100 million that invested in 10 India-based companies and realised several successful exits. Its successor, Tano India Private Equity Fund II, closed at $111.3 million against a $150 million target, with a first close in November 2010 at $54 million and a second close in October 2011 at $97 million, raised only from offshore investors including family offices, institutions and funds of funds. From the second fund, the firm planned to invest $12 million to $20 million across about eight companies. One disclosed deal, in oral-care maker JHS Svendgaard Laboratories, was Rs 24.4 crore for a 14.7 per cent stake.
Notable portfolio
Tano India Private Equity Fund II invested Rs 80 crore in agri-logistics provider Shree Shubham Logistics, a unit of Kalpataru Power Transmission operating 90 warehouses with around 11 lakh metric tonnes of storage capacity. It also invested Rs 60 crore in microfinance institution Arohan Financial Services for a 30 per cent stake. Other portfolio companies include Development Credit Bank, Shilpa Medicare, luggage maker Safari, wellness venture Sanghvi Brands, Promac Industries (about Rs 33 crore) and SSIPL Retail. Exits include Shilpa Medicare at a reported 4.5 times return and the strategic sale of Ravin Cables to Italy's Prysmian.

How to apply for funding
Founders should approach Tano Capital with eyes open: Tano India Private Equity Fund II is the last verified fund vehicle, and no successor fund has been publicly announced in the sources reviewed, so confirm the current mandate before pitching. The historical fit is a company with an existing business record and a credible four-to-five-year growth plan in manufacturing, engineering, healthcare, logistics, consumer or financial services, seeking roughly $12 million to $20 million for a significant minority stake. Expect deep diligence on operations and governance, and a partner that stays invested for years rather than flipping quickly.
Why it matters for founders
Tano Capital is the template for mid-market growth equity in India: real revenues, real assets, and a multi-year partner. If your company already has a track record and needs $12 million to $20 million to scale, study this profile, but verify the fund is still investing before you pitch.
